In colonial times, annual consumption was ~7 gallons/yr & today it’s just 2 gallons. This was primarily in the form of beer, cider, & whiskey. The most popular container was a bowl. Prior to 1800 a "tankard" was a 3 gallon vessel. Now you know where the term "tanked" came from.
