Let’s raise the minimum wage in the United States,” said Pritzker when CNN’s Kaitlan Collins asked him what Democrats should prioritize. "I mean $7.25 is the federal minimum wage. You can't survive on $14,000 a year with a single full-time job," he said. "People even with two full-time jobs at $7.25, that's $28,000. You can't raise a family on that, barely survive yourself." The last minimum wage increase was enacted in 2007, when Democrats controlled Congress and George W. Bush was in the White House. Despite being a Republican, which is to say aligned with corporations and bosses, Bush signed it because he knew how bad a veto would look. Trump will find himself in a similar predicament if Democrats pursue this kind of legislation. And in Trump's case, he has no real beliefs anyway. He may well sign a minimum wage raise so that he has something to brag about amidst the burning wreckage of his failed presidency. "So that seems like an easy first step but there's so many other things," said Pritzker, who easily won reelection on Tuesday. "I mean even before you get to the harder things like universal healthcare, which I think a lot of people want to make sure happens, what about just focusing on giving people a few paid days off?" "Here in Illinois we give people a whole week off, paid. Because if you're a working person, I mean you just can't survive, you can't go on vacation," he said. "There's no joy anymore. You're just barely surviving by paying your bills if you can. So I think there's some pretty easy things that they can go after." This is another great idea. Democrats have a historic opportunity right now to deliver for the American people. We can restore their faith in government and prove that we are fundamentally different from the Republicans. Americans deserve to live meaningful, dignified lives and providing hard-working people with the means to carve out vacation time for themselves would go a long way. "Look, will President Trump veto those things? I hope not," said Pritzker. "I hope he will understand what the American people have said.
