Fun (slash slightly depressing?) to be interviewed for this article from @JLLiedl via @NCRegister. Would love to hear reactions to this -- are the concerns overstated? Understated? Miss the mark altogether? Do your worst... (Oh and happy Valentines Day ❤️)
Single and not loving it, @red10meg ripped off a tweet that has since become Catholic Twitter lore. "Marry me you cowards!" It wasn't about 1 bad date, but a sense of general frustration. And judging by the reactions, she wasn't the only one feeling it. ncregister.com/news/2025-cat…

How rare was what happened at the end of Indiana–Minnesota? Before that game, there had never been an NCAA or NFL game in which both teams made a field goal of 60 yards or longer in the final 30 seconds of regulation. First time in the history of the sport of football.

It is, I fear, worse than I thought
Terrific response by Cardinal Jean-Paul Vesco to @BishopBarron disgraceful attack on his integrity. Vesco speaks from the Church, Barron for himself.

yeah this is insane lmao

"If I really thought that the Church does not exist to bring people to Christ, then I would resign and get an honest job." Damn +Bobby you didn't have to go so hard (Actually yes yes you did)
Well, another Cardinal has come out with a, shall we say, puzzling take on evangelization. A few years ago, Cardinal Américo Aguiar, at the time auxiliary bishop of Lisbon, said that he and the other organizers of World Youth Day in his hometown had no interest in converting anyone to Christ. Now Cardinal Jean-Paul Vesco of Algeria has opined that “the Church is not there to convert” and “Christians should approach other religions through fraternity rather than seeking conversions.” Excuse me, but…what? Last time I checked, the Founder said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” Sure sounds like conversion to me. When St. Paul came to Corinth or Athens or Thessalonica, his purpose was not to listen or to form a discussion group but rather to declare an unnerving message: the euangelion (glad tidings) that Jesus Christ is risen from the dead. So impassioned is he for this work that he says, “I have become all things to all people, that I might by all means save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel” (1 Cor. 9:22); and “If I proclaim the gospel, this gives me no ground for boasting, for an obligation is laid on me, and woe to me if I do not proclaim the gospel” (1 Cor. 9:16)! Moreover, the entire thrust of the Second Vatican Council was toward bringing the Light of Christ to the peoples of the world (Lumen Gentium). And this missionary élan has given rise in the last few decades to the idea of a “new evangelization,” which is to say, a fresh declaration of the Lordship of Christ. Quite obviously, no one thinks that this work of evangelization should be done in a brow-beating, overbearing, or disrespectful manner (proselytization), but for God’s sake, let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater. If I really thought that the Church does not exist to bring people to Christ, then I would resign and get an honest job.

I was unprepared how easy they made it look tbh
Quinn Hughes and Kirill Kaprizov are making this sport look WAY too easy. 😳😮 Kaprizov retakes sole possession for the NHL lead in goal with 13. #mnwild

Lots of folks in the pro-life movement browbeat and shamed people for not supporting Trump, and now we have more abortions, the generic abortion pill, a completely watered-down GOP plank on abortion, and public executions. Absolutely pathetic and very, very sad.

I’m absolutely heartbroken to hear this news, and I’m thinking of Bernadette and her loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. We cannot tolerate political or sexual violence in any form. Those responsible must be held accountable. Thank you for speaking out, Bernadette. We're with you. phoenixnewtimes.com/news/con…

There are many secular critics who are writing admirably about AI. But it's been apparent to me for a while that religious—particularly catholic—critics are speaking to the public's moral disquiet in a way that secular thinkers, reliant on utilitarian claims about harm, are not.
In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.

🦔The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association says insurers paid out nearly $1 billion more than usual from AI-assisted hospital documentation in 2024-2025. Hospitals use AI to scan records and find secondary diagnoses that human reviewers missed. More diagnoses means higher reimbursements. But treatment levels haven't gone up. BCBSA's SVP of data science said AI is "identifying more billable conditions, not sicker patients." Insurers now deploy their own AI to deny those same claims. Patients pay for both through higher premiums. My Take This might be the most American healthcare story I've ever read. Hospitals bought AI to find more things to bill for. Insurers bought AI to deny those bills. The technology cost money on each end and the tab went straight to patients through higher premiums. A billion dollars moved and no one got any healthier. The only thing that changed was the size of the invoices. Two sides of a trillion-dollar industry found a new tool to fight over the same pool of money and the person in the hospital bed pays for all of it. Premiums go up, denials go up, and the AI vendors collect from everyone. If you want to know who AI works for, stop reading the press releases and look at where the money goes. In healthcare it went straight into the billing department. Hedgie🤗

Biggest sign of how far the NBA and pro sports have come on gambling: David Stern wouldn't let Toronto get its expansion franchise in the 1990s until Ontario stopped letting people bet on NBA games. The Vancouver ownership group preemptively reached a deal with BC to do the same. From the great @SmithRaps in his 1994 story: "League officials said they didn't want people 'betting the grocery money' on games and wanted fans 'to cheer for the team, not the point spread.'" David Stern: "It's a principle."
