A landmark trial accusing Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and 34 senior political and military figures of crimes against humanity had its first formal hearing in Istanbul today.
Turkish prosecutors have charged 35 Israeli defendants, including Netanyahu and ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Israel Katz, with torture, unlawful deprivation of liberty, aggravated robbery, vessel hijacking and crimes against humanity in relation to last yearβs Gaza aid flotilla. They are also accused of genocide in Palestine.
The trial had its first formal hearing this morning following the issuing of arrest warrants in July and Turkish requests for an Interpol red notice in August. Charges are being pursued under universal jurisdiction, which allows countries to address international crimes occurring abroad.
The case focuses primarily on incidents surrounding the illegal interception of boats from the 2025 Global Sumud Flotilla mission.
On 31 August 2025, more than 50 ships carrying around 500 participants from 44 countries set off from Barcelona to break Israelβs illegal blockade of Gaza and deliver aid to those trapped there.
The flotilla was subject to a number of drone attacks, most notably off the coasts of Tunisia and Greece, before being illegally intercepted by Israel in international waters. Those on board were detained and have accused Israeli forces of subjecting them to human rights abuses including rape, assault, degrading treatment, withholding of medical care and more.
Turkey negotiated the release of hundreds of participants, including a Novara Media contributor, on charter flights to Istanbul, where legal and medical teams gathered evidence of severe mistreatment.
βThis trial is not just about seeking justice for the 101 victims represented in this case; it is a fundamental challenge to the doctrine of impunity," said the Global Sumud Flotilla legal team. "When states use armed force against unarmed civilians attempting to deliver life-saving relief to a starved population, individuals within that chain of command must face judicial scrutiny."
The trial in Istanbul comes as prosecutors in Rome, Italy, expand an investigation into Israeli officials for the mistreatment of 50 Italian participants of Global Sumud Flotilla missions. Officials including Ben-Gvir, Katz, IDF chief of staff Eyal Zamir and 11 others are being investigated for suspected torture, kidnapping, personal injury, robbery, property damage and damage causing danger of shipwreck.

The findings have alarmed banking executives, who are racing to restrict access to their systems as AI moves at a velocity faster than financial institutions can respond, multiple industry and bank executives told Axios.

Crowds of Palestinians pressed against a food distribution point in Khan Younis in southern Gaza, as cuts to food aid push families back toward famine.
The scenes come days after the World Food Programme cut food assistance in Gaza by about a third, citing funding shortages. Some 500,000 people lost aid, and WFP now reaches 1.1 million people, down from 1.6 million in September. Families now get one food parcel instead of two, and daily hot meals have fallen from 250,000 to 150,000. WFP says it needs $450 million to keep operations running through March.
About 1.4 million people in Gaza, two-thirds of the population, face crisis-level hunger or worse, and 200,000 need immediate food aid to avoid starvation, according to the UN.

β‘οΈ Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to demolish an entire Hebron neighborhood, expel its residents and build "more and more settlements" after two Israeli soldiers were killed in a shooting near the illegally occupied West Bank city on Friday.
Two Palestinian gunmen opened fire at a junction outside Hebron, killing a staff sergeant and a sergeant, before Israeli forces killed them. Palestinian media identified them as Hamouda Jaaba and Firas Jaaba, both 27, from Hebron. Netanyahu blamed Hamas but offered no evidence beyond ammunition the army said it found in their car.
"Our first step will be to demolish this site and completely transform it," Netanyahu said, adding Israel is "building and arranging over 100 new settlements." Israeli forces sealed off Hebron, the largest city in the West Bank, and arrested dozens as Netanyahu ordered preparations for a full closure of the entire West Bank β applying to Palestinians only, with Israeli roads staying open to settlers.
The news comes just five days before Israel's elections, with Netanyahu trailing in the polls.

The killing and violence Israel is responsible for are escalating across the West Bank. But the Elimination Project that Israel is carrying out goes far beyond that. As our head of field research Kareem Jubran explains, it is about dismantling the conditions that allow Palestinians to exist as a people, a society and a collective in their homeland.
The Elimination Project is an ongoing process that affects every aspect of life. It involves demolishing homes, expelling communities, taking over land and water sources, destroying livelihoods and suppressing political and social organizing. Israel prevents people from getting to work, going to school or harvesting olives on their own land. Violence by soldiers and settler militias keeps millions of Palestinians in a constant state of fear, turning even simple everyday activities into potential threats to their lives and physical safety.
This is the Elimination Project: a set of mechanisms working together to push Palestinians off their land and dismantle their ability to live together as an independent society, with their own institutions, identity, rights and future. At the same time, Israel is expanding and deepening its control and Jewish presence across the West Bank.
