She had an answer for everything.
The alcohol?
“A friend gave it to me.”
Then it came from a gas station.
Then it was a gift.
The produce on the floor?
“That’s from Aldi.”
The receipt?
First it was on her phone.
Then suddenly her sister had it.
Police had stopped her outside Walmart after loss prevention reported watching her walk out with merchandise they believed she never paid for.
She refused to go back inside.
She wanted an attorney.
She accused employees of harassing her.
And she kept insisting the merchandise wasn’t stolen.
So while she stayed outside arguing her case, a supervisor walked into Walmart and watched the surveillance footage.
According to police, the video showed her taking the alcohol and leaving without paying.
He came back outside.
The excuses were over.
She was placed in handcuffs and was ultimately charged with retail theft.
She survived a kidnapping.
Then police publicly suggested she made the whole thing up.
That was Denise Huskins and Aaron Quinn’s nightmare.
In the middle of the night, an intruder entered Aaron’s Vallejo, California home.
Aaron and Denise were restrained, their eyes covered, and they were forced to drink a sleep-inducing liquid while prerecorded instructions and threats played around them.
Then Denise was taken.
Aaron was left behind with instructions involving ransom money.
But when he went to police, the story sounded so elaborate that suspicion began turning toward him instead.
For hours, Aaron was questioned while Denise was still missing.
Two days later, Denise suddenly appeared hundreds of miles away in Huntington Beach.
She was alive.
And instead of ending the mystery, her return somehow made things worse.
Vallejo police publicly announced that the kidnapping appeared to be a hoax.
The case was quickly compared to Gone Girl.
Denise and Aaron insisted they were telling the truth.
Then, months later, another home invasion changed everything.
Police investigating that separate case arrested former attorney Matthew Muller.
Inside the investigation, authorities found evidence connecting him to Denise and Aaron’s ordeal.
Recordings.
Items matching their descriptions.
Evidence tied directly to the kidnapping.
The unbelievable story police had doubted…
had happened.
Muller eventually pleaded guilty to federal kidnapping and was sentenced to 40 years in prison. He later received a 31-year state sentence on additional charges connected to what happened to Denise.
Denise and Aaron later married.
They also reached a $2.5 million settlement with the City of Vallejo after suing over how they were treated.
Maybe the most haunting part of this case isn’t how unbelievable their story sounded.
It’s that they were telling the truth while almost no one believed them.
