New Start, California: The Cooley Fire, on the Mendocino and Sonoma county line, is an interesting fire that’s becoming more active this afternoon. It started as a private property prescribed burn. The burn was fully approved, but got out of containment lines, and was declared a wildfire. Air Attack is now overhead, and has requested two Type 1 helicopters. Cal Fire units have also responded. Currently 78 degrees with 19% RH. More on this and the other California fires on today’s show.

California: Crazy footage from @SeaKingOptions while mountain biking on the trails during the Norte Fire. It gives a very good look at the winds, extreme fire behavior, and why you don’t want to be up close. 400 firefighters are on scene, and another 400 have been ordered. The fire is 570+ acres and has burned an estimated dozen properties.

"Watch Duty closes a lot of gaps. Having staff and volunteers who can monitor incidents and provide information is vital." As a Public Information Officer, volunteering for Watch Duty means Eric can support people across his home state of Colorado, even in places where emergency information isn't usually easily accessible.

A firefighter’s POV from the #GulchFire on Oct. 6 in southern Sonoma County. Watch as firefighters from #CALFIRELNU’s Station 46 in Glen Ellen work alongside our partners from the Schell-Vista Fire District and @Svfd_33 to establish a hose lay along the flank of the fire, while CAL FIRE S2T Airtankers deliver fire retardant drops overhead. Thanks to a rapid response, coordinated teamwork and an aggressive initial attack, this fire was held to just 1.25 acres.

🛰️Satellite imagery shows a broad upper level circulation incorporating remnant moisture from Rachel over the Great Basin. Mostly clear conditions expected over the SF Bay Area and Central Coast tonight, another cold night is likely across the inland valleys. #CAwx

Talk about "crispy dry" higher up! 🍂 The 5 AM Oakland 🎈balloon launch measured an astonishing 2% RH, while mountain spots like the Santa Lucia Range (Chews Ridge) hit 3% RH with gusts up to 20 mph overnight. 🔥Fire danger is elevated in higher terrain, one less spark today!

2026 was one of the largest wildfire seasons in over a decade. Oregon broke its all-time record for acres burned, and Utah had its worst fire year since 2007. Washington saw more than double the number of acres burned from last year. And in Colorado, the Aspen Acres Fire became one of the most destructive fires in state history and burned over 100,000 acres.

A warming trend is underway under clear skies. Highs today reach low 80s–low 90s near the coast and mid 90s–105°F in interior locations. Heat Advisories remain in effect for much of the region. Stay hydrated, find shade, and check on vulnerable neighbors. #CAwx #BayAreaWx

A long duration heatwave is on track to affect the area through Thursday, with high temps of 95-107. Stay hydrated, and watch for signs of heat illness in yourself & others. Never leave kids or pets in a parked car, vehicles become deadly hot quickly. #caheat #CaWx

Saturday will be one of the hottest days of the year for the entire Bay Area. Downtown San Francisco is forecast to reach 94°F in the afternoon, while Ocean Beach, just over 6 miles to the west, is expected to be in the low 60s. The Outer Sunset and Outer Richmond could briefly climb into the 80s around noon before the sea breeze kicks in during the afternoon. Welcome to Indian Summer.
