The Norm entrance jokes on Cheers were famously tough to write.
George Wendt delivered 200+ of them over 11 seasons. As the show’s popularity grew, so did expectations. Writers said the real genius wasn’t always on the page; it was Wendt’s physical comedy, delivery, and timing.

This song is so iconic, from an era when music was truly incredible. 🎶🔥❤️
Some singers have voices you can recognize after just a few seconds. Andy Bell is one of them.
Put on “A Little Respect” and you don’t need to check the name of the artist. His voice tells you. It has a warmth to it, but there is also something bright and slightly unusual. The lower notes have a gentle roughness, while the higher notes become clear and almost weightless. His falsetto never sounds like he is trying to show off. It just feels like part of his voice.
But what I like most about Bell isn’t simply that he can hit those high notes. It’s the way he sings the words.
He doesn’t stretch every syllable to make the song sound more emotional. He doesn’t push too hard on the important lines. He lets the words come out naturally, almost like someone saying something they genuinely mean.
That’s why “a little respect” feels so convincing.
It doesn’t sound like someone begging desperately for attention. It sounds like a simple request: I’m not asking for much. Just treat me with some respect.
There is something surprisingly powerful about that.
Bell also makes the difficult parts sound easy. Even when the melody climbs, his voice stays controlled and relaxed. You rarely think about the technique behind it because nothing feels forced. You simply hear the emotion.
And that is probably the hardest thing to imitate.
Another singer could copy the notes, the rhythm, and even the general phrasing. But reproducing Bell’s particular combination of tone, pronunciation, timing, and personality is much harder. His voice has character. He sounds comfortable being himself, and that gives the song something no amount of technical perfection can create.
I think that is one reason “A Little Respect” has lasted.
Yes, it sounds unmistakably like late-1980s synth-pop. The production belongs to its era. But the feeling at the center of the song doesn’t belong to any particular decade.
Most of us have had moments when we simply wanted to be heard, treated kindly, or taken seriously. We may express it differently, but the need is still there.
So when the chorus comes around and Andy Bell reaches those familiar high notes again, what stays with you isn’t just the catchy melody.
It is the feeling of someone asking clearly for what they need without losing their dignity.
Just a little respect.
Sometimes, that really is enough.
