Our work with Odile Crabeck, @HutterNils and @jclandy about the rapid decrease of sea-ice density in summer leading to non-decreasing ice freeboard during 0.6 m ice thickness loss:

At 87.5N, 15.5W we made quick stop to deploy an @UiTNorgesarktis weather station and and an @arctic_passion ice mass balance buoy. Fingers crossed they survive the drift towards Fram Strait and gather some valuable data. #NPIArcticOceanCruise #SUDARCO #Arctic

The Arctic Ocean has lost much of its multiyear sea ice (MYI). This is well understood, but what exactly has driven this loss?
In our new paper we create a MYI budget to examine the relative contributions of export, melt and replenishment to MYI loss.

The Open Access article will be out next week, but here's a little tease of our latest paper on one of the most dramatic changes occurring in the Arctic Ocean - The loss of multiyear sea ice & transition to a younger, thinner ice pack.
This paper was a struggle, but here we are!
Multiyear ice once covered the majority of the Arctic Ocean, however its areal extent has declined with ice pack transitioning to a younger state that is more susceptible to melt. Babb et al., explore trends in multiyear ice export, melt and replenishment.

Do you post a pre-print? I don't know.
Will twitter still exist in a few months? Seems doubtful.
With that in mind, here is a pre-print of our latest paper on the stepwise reduction of multiyear sea ice area in the Arctic Ocean from 1980-2021.
