It was fun chairing #UIST2024 with @lining_yao and @hciprof! And it was great to have @wobbrockjo give the closing talk on his super impactful work. He started his talk with this quote from Scott Hudson.

[Transformer] by Hand ✍️ Make Your Own 🛠️👉 by-hand.ai/sp/tfmr Over the past few months, I've collaborated with several AI educators to customize my AI by Hand exercises. I am glad that my materials are being used and appreciated in many classrooms around the world! However, because the customization process is entirely by hand, sometimes my solution contains errors, only to be caught by students, which actually made me happy that students are paying attention. 😅 Lately, I have been thinking about developing a tool to let people create their own AI by Hand exercises, with custom numbers and solutions. After considering a range of technologies, I decided to use Google Sheets. My goal is to maximize reach and broaden access. Because this tool is still in the early stage, I would really appreciate your feedback! What other topics do you want to see next?

Can we trust foundation models to accurately tell us if we have COVID or if someone is pregnant? It turns out that there is still a long way to go before we can trust these models! Check out our recent paper (to be presented at @CVPR DEF-AI-MIA) lead by Stuti Pandey!

Huge amount of awesome new #accessibility features coming to Apple platforms this year. My favorites are a new reader mode added to Magnifier and Hover Typing (a large-text typing experience on iOS). Another great Global Accessibility Awareness Day! apple.com/newsroom/2024/05/a…

What does ML model compression have to do with HCI and design? Over the past few years @Apple we've been working in this intersection, and I’m excited to share 2 new papers on compression in practice and the importance of interactive tools. Catch them back-to-back at #CHI2024!

In light of discussions of HCI's relevance to ML alignment, I wrote up some thoughts. TLDR: HCI perspective has lots to offer, but pointing to common goals won't have impact. If you really care, invest enough in understanding ML to show how you can help statmodeling.stat.columbia.e…
