Dads, please remember, the most powerful leaders lead with persuasion, long-suffering, gentleness, meekness, love unfeigned, kindness, and knowledge. Control, dominion, and compulsion may produce temporary compliance, but they also breed resentment and rebellion. You may get compliance, but you won’t get conversion. And without conversion, the relationship becomes a house of cards, just waiting to collapse. Control is easy. That’s why it’s so tempting. It’s a shortcut. It allows us to get the behavior we want without doing the difficult work of building trust, developing relationships, and earning influence. Think about the contrast between God’s approach and Satan’s. God tells Adam, “By the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread.” In other words, meaningful things require effort, patience, and work. Satan, on the other hand, tempts Cain with a shortcut: “You don’t have to earn it. You don’t have to wait. Just take what you want.” Control is the shortcut to compliance. Love is the long road to conversion. And while control may change someone’s behavior for a moment, love has the power to change someone’s heart forever.

The Book of Mormon is a great witness that the Lord loves all people and reaches out to all, everywhere. The Book of Mormon adds to our knowledge of how our Savior’s earthly ministry reached out to all of His scattered flock. Book of Mormon teachings contradict the erroneous assertion that the grace of God saves only a chosen few. The Book of Mormon teaches that our Savior "inviteth ... all to come unto him" (2 Nephi 26:33). His grace is for all. Similarly, the Book of Mormon tells us that the children of God in “every nation” have His promise that He “manifesteth himself unto all those who believe in him, by the power of the Holy Ghost” (2 Nephi 26:13). These promises from the Book of Mormon are true. I call upon all to act on these truths and to share them with others, that we may all draw closer to Jesus Christ, our Savior.

This is a time of many harsh and hurtful words in our public communications and sometimes even in our families. Sharp differences on issues of public policy often result in actions of hostility—even hatred—in public and personal relationships. We need to love and do good to all. We need to avoid contention and be peacemakers in all our communications. This does not mean to compromise our principles and priorities, but to cease harshly attacking others for theirs. That is what our Perfect Role Model did in His ministry. That is the example He set for us, as He invited us to follow Him. As followers of Christ, let us teach and testify of Jesus Christ, our Perfect Role Model. Let us follow Him by foregoing contention. As we pursue our preferred policies in public actions, let us qualify for His blessings by using the language and methods of peacemakers. In our families and other personal relationships, let us avoid what is harsh and hateful. Let us seek to be holy, like our Savior.

I'd like to listen to this version of the New Testament. Cool story!
James Earl Jones was a devout Catholic who considered narrating the New Testament one of the most meaningful achievements of his life. bit.ly/4grjcC6

Just sitting here wondering when did so much of our society become about “winning” & “likes” more than “character” & “respect”? The attacking of opponents with differing views (especially true in political world), the willingness to say or do anything to another for views, using our platforms to point out the shortcomings of others (when we have plenty ourselves) instead of looking to create quality content! SMH How amazing would it be to live in a world where we looked to stand on OUR strengths, where most were self-confidence enough they could lift others up & we always considered how what we do affects others? I woke up dreaming!

Anger, hate, insults, revenge, outrage, and threats get more comments and shares than love, kindness, compliments, forgiveness, composure, and help, but you don’t have to be part of it.

From one dad to another, AMEN Hank!
Apparently there are non-parents who think it is very apparent how to be a good parent. To all you non-parents, it is not even remotely apparent how to be good parent even after you become a parent.

One day when I was repairing the roof on our home, I went to a local store to purchase some additional supplies. I was wearing my customary work clothes—casual pants and shoes, a well-worn T-shirt, and a baseball hat. Wanting to quickly return home and complete my project, I hurriedly entered the store and began looking for the things I needed. A man approached me as I was selecting my supplies and said, “Elder Bednar, the disguise is not working.” We laughed, and then he inquired, “Do you mind if I ask you a question?” I responded, “Well, that is why I am here.” He replied quizzically, “What do you mean?” I said, “You are the reason I am here. I am doing repair work at my home, and I need a few things to finish the task. But I am not in this store simply to buy roofing nails. I am here because God knew we were going to meet each other in this store and that you had something about which you wanted to ask. Please go ahead and share with me your question.” We talked in the aisle for about 15 minutes, and I tried to help him find the answer to his question. Was it merely a coincidence that I encountered this good man at the local store? Or was this episode divinely orchestrated by a loving Savior who knew and responded to the concerns of a faithful man—a one? I believe that in the work of the Lord there is no such thing as a coincidence. The worth of souls is great in the sight of God.

A favorite Gong Christmas tradition is to read Charles Dickens’s “A Christmas Carol” aloud as a family. I’ve often wondered why, when we refer to Scrooge, do we think primarily of a grumpy old miser, someone who scoffs at Christmas as a big “humbug”? Why don’t we acknowledge more the new Scrooge? The new Scrooge who generously sends the prize turkey as a Christmas surprise? The new Scrooge who reconciles with his cheerful nephew Freddie? The new Scrooge who raises Bob Cratchit’s salary and cares for Tiny Tim? Are there those around us, perhaps we ourselves, who could be a different person if only we would stop typecasting or stereotyping them as their old self? No person and no family is perfect. We each have foibles and faults—things we wish to do better. This Christmas, perhaps we can receive—and offer—Jesus Christ’s precious gifts of change and repentance, of forgiving and forgetting, for each other and ourselves. Let us make peace with the past year. Let go of the emotional angst and noise, the frictions and annoyances, that clutter our lives. May we grant each other our new possibilities instead of fixating on our past limitations. Let’s give the new Scrooge in each of us a chance to change.

No matter what we may do, we will never be lost to our Savior. With the blessing of repentance, we can turn to Him. He will help us learn, grow, and change as we strive to stay on the covenant path.
