Yay! Just submitted our #DistanceDoctorates manuscript! Have so enjoyed reading through all the student stories about what distance doctoral study makes possible. And have loved working across distance with such excellent collaborators!
Two surprised recipients of an award today for work on research culture! Trotted off to a meeting and then suddenly cameras and guests arrived! Very happy to share this with @EmilyFrascatore who always brings much wow and wonder!
Super interesting discussion today at #diarymethod Online Reading Group hearing from @Auralisings about a study which used private diaries about negotiation of condom use in heterosex. Thx to convenors and all the groups for the interesting convo!

Do you (or does someone you know) manage an institutional webpage which has info for applicants about how to apply for doctoral study? @Dangeni_ Sophia and I have written a post for the @SRHE73 blog offering some guidance based on our #PADC_project

Big congrats to @Warwick_Edu PGR Fatima Alhaj Hasan who passed her upgrade/proposal defence today! Fatima’s PhD work is on conflict between academics in Syrian HE & it’s management. Pictured here with sups me & @EmilyFrascatore & panel @GeorgianaMihut & Abdullah Sahin. Happy day!
In Chapter 6 ‘Thinking about Conferences’ we hope to tempt those reaching for the book to devote some time to think critically about conferencing practices – including EDI, democratisation of knowledge, environment/sustainability and the fragility.resilience of conferences.
In Chapter 5 ‘Organising Conferences’ we turn to practical and critical considerations for organising a conference, thinking of this process as ‘curating’ a conference.
In Chapter 4 ‘Presenting at conference’ we offer an overarching view of the process of presenting, both from a practical point of view as well as raising critical questions for presenters to consider.
In Chapter 3 ‘Participating in a conference’ we identify strategies to maximise conference participation from the start to post-conference activities.
In Chapter 2 ‘Pre-conference: selecting, preparing, and conference travel’ covers questions researchers might contemplate before attending a conference and outlines steps researchers can take to determine which conferences are out there.
The book has 5 big chapters, each with its own beautiful illustration produced by the totally fabulous Rhiannon Nichols.
Emily and I are thrilled to bits to have written this book 'Making Sense of Academic Conferences’. It emerges out of our joint work on conferences over more than a decade through research projects, teaching, and running our #ConferenceInference Blog.
