Standing Order 29 of @ParliamentLK provides guidance to the Speaker on how to proceed on a matter of privilege concerning Parliament. Says such “… shall take precedence over all other motions…”and says the member shall “inform” the Speaker and “obtain permission”.
Usual practice is that this is done around 9am, before proceedings at 9:30. Today MPs including LOP @sajithpremadasa, @DayasiriJ @ManoGanesan @ChanakaMadugoda and Mujibur Rahman waited since before 9am till 9:30 am to inform and obtain permission for the privilege motion on the matter regarding the government’s refusal to take up the No Confidence Motion against the speaker; a very serious matter related to alleged corruption. However the Speaker didn’t show up nor was any message of his absence communicated to the MPs. However the motion was anyway handed to his office.
Then, at 9:30am Deputy Speaker Rizvie Salih took the chair and proceeded with business of the day and when the time came to take up the privilege motion he insisted that he didn’t have time to study the motion and refused the MPs to read out the motion. And that is why there was huge uproar in the House.
Parliament conducts business based on Standing Orders and precedence. Today both were violated by the NPP/JVP government, and democratic rights of the people.
NPP @Lakmali89 built her profile opposing repressive laws in opposition, but now justifies those same authoritarian bills once in power.
Democracy & human rights aren't political costumes you discard when you join government. Pure hypocrisy.
At the time, she represented the group "Prativada."

SAJITH PREMADASA has initiated a program to construct a life-sized statue of ‘Kawantissa’, named by himself, at the Siyambalangamuwa Tank Reservation. It will be located in the estate premises of the late President R. Premadasa at Kahambiliyawetiyawatta in Ambanpola, located in close proximity to the area frequently inhabited by the Kahalle-Pallekele herd, of which Kawantissa was the anointed leader.
The area allocated will comprise of the said statue and a research/library premises that would promote research, establish a hub that enables initiatives to minimize and mitigate human-elephant conflict, and promote the conservation of tuskers and elephant herds for the benefit of the present and future generations of Sri Lankans.
This program will be implemented through the ”KAWANTISSA” - TUSKER PROTECTION TASK FORCE, headed by Sajith Premadasa, Leader of the Opposition and Co-Chairman of the Parliamentary Caucus on Climate Change.
Sajith Premadasa invites all those who love Kawantissa to join hands and become partners in this noble initiative.
