Last light of the summer solstice, 2026. The clouds broke up just in time to watch the sun glide below the horizon. It was hard not to think about my dad, with it being Father’s Day and the longest day of the year.
I remember taking photos of the golden rails with him during Sun Down Days in Hanlontown during the summer solstice while growing up. He patiently helped me with my camera settings and told me to wait as the sun dipped closer and closer to the horizon. Back then we had to wait days, maybe even weeks, to see the results. Compared to the digital cameras of today, I’d say I had plenty of patience back then.
Nonetheless, my dad would give me tips to improve my shots, and we would talk through the moments we witnessed. I miss him on evenings like tonight, but I know he’s close by, watching the magic as it unfolds.
Happy Father’s Day, dad.
