The funny thing is that no one in China wants to replace the US as a global superpower.
This is one of many reasons why China will never be a global superpower to rival the US.

@gonglei89 @Brad_Setser @michaelxpettis One reason I get annoyed at think tanks like @CFR_org and the Washington eggheads is that no one seems to be even *THINKING* about the real economic issues. For example, why the hell are we in an inflationary environment.

The thing is that in 2008 we were getting new supply from China and Russia. Once you cut off China and Russia, then when you print money, it doesn't go to new supply and you just get inflation. Okay, this might be wrong. Has anyone in Washington got any better ideas,

or are you just pulling out economic theories from 2010 that *don't work*. The thing about the Chinese economic scene is that people are actually thinking and debating these ideas.

Here is an interesting thread where the geopolitics of Taiwan comes in. One fascinating thing is that in local elections the conventional wisdom is to avoid geopolitics. But it is seeping in.
She’s not unimpressive. Americans are too invested in containing China by pushing Taiwan to the front line of their new cold war to listen to her message of peace.

The thing about Chiang's messaging is that "well if you can't trust Shen, what makes you think he will improve traffic congestion in Taipei, you can trust Chiang.". One weakness that Shen has is because he is vague as to how you should vote for him, you can do a bait and switch.

Also one thing about Taiwan politics is that "he is a US puppet" won't win an argument. The interesting thing is that "well he is a Chinese puppet" is working less and less well. It won't work for anyone under 30.

@Tracey_PayneAsi @AngelicaOung @russfeingold One thing about the Taipei mayoral race is that there just aren't that many polls so it is very possible that the "ocean current" is a mirage. This would not happen in Presidential races, because there are dozens of polls, and

particularly scandal, then you could point to that. Also I know people will want to say its KMT's China friendly policy, but all that stuff was (deliberately) done before election season and wouldn't explain a sudden rise. Arguing that a good economy, wouldn't explain a rise

since June. What might explain is name recognition. Shen started his campaign early, and just seeing a new face might push the numbers. But if it is media driven, it could just as quickly move back.
