The Lawyers Committee on Nuclear Policy is hosting a side event at the NPT Review Conference at UNHQ, NY on April 30th, 2026. This year marks 30 years since the 1996 ICJ Advisory Opinion on the legality of Nuclear Weapons, a landmark case initiated by a civil society movement that raised the critical question of whether any use or threat of use of nuclear weapons can ever be lawful. IALANA, along with other civil society partners and several LCNP Board members, played a central role in the World Court Project that brought this significant issue to the ICJ. During this event, we will discuss State legal obligations under Article VI of the NPT and reflect on the 30 years since the ICJ Advisory Opinion, which underscored the obligation of states to pursue negotiations in good faith towards nuclear disarmament. @RAShoot @MishraSylvia @johnburroughs @pnndglobal
