The execution of two Bangladeshis in Saudi Arabia has given rise to a number of legal misconceptions. In an interview with BBC Bangla yesterday, I tried to clarify some of them, though several serious conceptual confusions still remain in the BBC's report.
Below are some of the points I raised in the interview (translated from Bangla):
"Both Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia are parties to the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations (1963). Both countries are therefore bound by its provisions on the detention of foreign nationals.
. . .
In essence, Article 36 of the Vienna Convention guarantees the consular and legal rights of foreign nationals. When a foreign national is detained, the consular service of their country must be informed. Consular officers can then speak with their national and arrange the necessary legal protection.
. . .
Article 36 guarantees that a national arrested or detained in a foreign state has the right to communicate with their own country's consulate and to receive legal assistance. Under it, consular officers may visit, speak and correspond with the detained person, and may arrange legal representation if that person wishes.
. . .
From the information available, the two Bangladeshis were executed after an appeal process. In other words, this did not happen overnight. The Bangladesh mission ought to have known. It is not acceptable to say it could not have known unless the individuals or the Saudi authorities told it, because the process clearly did not unfold in a single day.
Furthermore, under the Vienna Convention, the two detainees should have been informed of their right to consular assistance and asked whether they wished to receive it. Saudi Arabia must be able to show evidence that this was done." [Paragraphs rearranged]

Enligt vissa rapporter har Saudiarabien avrättat ett par bangladeshier för "omoraliska handlingar" i en moské (möjligtvis en kyss). Ser inga rapporter i västerländsk media, är det en skröna eller är de ointresserade?
Hade någon 1800-tals akademiker uppfunnit ett begrepp som "mäns våld mot kvinnor" fast tvärtom (generaliserande, buntar ihop icke-våld med våld och även kvinnors våld räknas dit) hade varenda feminist tagit upp det som bevis nr 1 på samhällets kvinnohat.
Var på Nordiska museet i helgen. Såg utställningen Nordbor. Intressant men undrade över en del texter. Tex: Är det rimligt att beskriva Sverige på 1500-talet som ett land där uråldriga gudar och väser levde kvar?

When the proof of Fermat's last theorem was announced by Wiles in June 1993, newspapers around the world covered it extensively. I was a ten-year-old boy in Calcutta, India, and the story was splashed across my local newspaper. A few months later, I went to a bookshop with my grandfather and bought two popular books that tried to explain what all the excitement was about.
Yesterday was the single greatest day of mathematical breakthroughs in history. This is not an exaggeration.
In terms the collective significance and depth of the results released, this was at least ten times, perhaps even a hundred times, as momentous as the proof of Fermat's Last Theorem.
So where is the media? Where are the headlines, the breathless newsrooms, the door to door conversations? Where is the sense of incredible wonder this moment deserves?

I svensk gammelmedia hittar jag bara några få generiska artiklar om ”skolprotester”.
Inget om den franska vänsterns agitation eller dess godkännande av våldet.
Insåg angående diskussionen här att det kunde varit ännu värre om det funnits återförda mandat. Men kanske är återföring just lösningen, om nya resultatet inte blir riksproportionerligt så återförs mandat bara i krets där det är omval.
