The death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person. The common good can be safeguarded and the requirements of justice can be met without recourse to capital punishment: effective systems of detention have been developed that protect citizens while at the same time do not completely deprive those who are guilty of the possibility of redemption. #NoDeathPenalty

25 years ago Ed McCaffrey suffered a gruesome compound fracture of the tibia and fibula in his lower left leg during the Denver Broncos season opener on September 10, 2001. #neverforget

When you're thinking like a scientist, motivated by the search for truth, you maintain a balance between skepticism and open-mindedness. When you're thinking like an attorney in a courtroom, motivated to confirm a certain narrative, you hop back and forth between extreme skepticism (when information contradicts your narrative) and extreme gullibility (when information supports your narrative). This is why the extreme skeptics are almost always also extremely gullible. Like Candace Owens in this clip, they'll flatly dismiss the mountain of evidence that the moon landing is real (extreme skepticism) and then turn around and uncritically embrace kooky conspiracy theories about why the moon landing was faked (extreme gullibility). The "they're all lying to us!" people are the same people who watch one YouTube video about an outlandish theory and come away absolutely positive it's the truth.
Candace Owens is the paradigm case of a person who allowed herself to become so open-minded that her brain fell out.

Some misinformation in today's US presidential debate about who bears the cost of tariffs. So let's talk about how tariffs affect what you pay for a suit. 🧵

True story. Walking to lunch, Dominic asked,” I thought we finished that scene?”, I replied” We did. Those are the real kids.” It was harsh reminder of the American dysfunction.
After wrapping up filming this scene, kids from the McCulloh Homes were slinging dope from the orange couch before Wendell Pierce & Dominic West even left the pit. #TheWire

To embarrass Northern liberals and humiliate Black people, southern White Citizens Councils started their so-called "Reverse Freedom Rides," giving Black people one-way tickets to northern cities with false promises of jobs, housing, and better lives. jfklibrary.org/asset-viewer/…

Student loan relief is not free. It would be paid for. Part of it would be paid for by the 87% of Americans who do not benefit but lose out from inflation. Part of it would be paid for by future spending cuts & tax increases—with uncertainty about who will bear those costs.

Today marks the end of what is surely one of the worst terms in #SCOTUS history. Guns and prayer and abortion got most of the attention. But that's not all the Court did. Here are just some of the Court's bad decisions: 1/25

TikTok is not just another video app. That’s the sheep’s clothing. It harvests swaths of sensitive data that new reports show are being accessed in Beijing. I’ve called on @Apple & @Google to remove TikTok from their app stores for its pattern of surreptitious data practices.

There’s a category of Democratic voter who is adamant that democracy is teetering, the planet is burning, women’s rights are at stake w/Roe and gun laws are threatening kids, but also they don’t see the point in voting if they don’t get more than $10k in student loan cancellation

The questions COVID grievers get are *always* the same. How were they exposed? Did they have a preexisting condition? Were they vaccinated? These questions smother their losses in stigma and judgment. They are constant, and they hurt. 6/ theatlantic.com/health/archi…

The Build Back Better plan that passed the House caps insulin prices at $35/mo, closes the Medicaid coverage gap in Ala and 11 other states, caps seniors' Rx costs at $2k annually and makes pre-k available to all. That's real life help for working people.

High R0, waning immunity and antigenic drift together suggest substantial seasonal circulation with a speculative guess of 20% or 30% of the population infected each year (often referred to as the "attack rate"). This is higher than flu due to R0 of ~6 rather than ~2. 13/17
