I've written a book on the peasantry of Ireland, which includes quite a bit more (because you never know when might drop dead).

The name of the POUM, the Marxist anti-Stalinist militia with which Orwell fought on the Aragón front, inscribed by some militia fighter in 1936-37 on the stone of this old farm hut, near Tierz, Huesca.

🎬 Before Liam Neeson, there was Bob McKenzie! A boy from Harryville went on to appear in more than 300 Hollywood films – and his wife and three daughters became movie stars too. Now their remarkable story has been honoured with a new plaque in Ballymena, with Liam Neeson himself marking the occasion. loveballymena.online/post/ha…

50 years of privatisation = a FAR BIGGER STATE with WAY MORE BUREAUCRACY bc privatisation introduces competition and therefore commercial secrecy and legal disputes + more state admin is needed to try to coordinate fragmented state contracts handed to the private sector

Imagine what kind of person sees this and thinks "wow, massive implications for search & rescue!"
Purdue University's IDEAS Lab built an autonomous drone that tracks runners through dense forests completely without GPS or cloud networks. By running 3D LiDAR mapping and obstacle-avoidance AI entirely on-chip, it can weave under tree canopies and predict target movement through blind spots in real time. Massive implications for next-gen search & rescue and edge AI.

Some bother with the 'echelons' (as Israeli statecraft puts it).

Nobody should underestimate the extraordinary rearguard action the Brazilian left has fought over the last three weeks but two very worrying factors remain: Lula/the PT have to contend with the most right-wing parliament in the hemisphere, and the country remains deeply divided

Humour is nowhere close to fear as a motivator - Machiavelli wasn't wrong about that. It's what drives the conservatives and the neoliberals - the fear of loss. Humour is a de-motivator, a cathartic release. In the mediaeval era the aristocrats held regular carnivals, encouraging the peasants to take the piss out of them - then it was back to work and debt. Marxists like Bakhtin and Ladurie got this completely wrong when they posited carnivals as sites of rebellion - the couple of times they got out of hand they were quickly and brutally crushed.

For historical purposes only. Also, it is still nearly impossible to publish anything on Chinese Trotskyism in the mainland: even pro-regime scholars go to publishers in Taiwan, HK or Singapore.

We had more days above 30 degrees C this Summer than during the whole of the 1980s. Yes, really! In one year! I personally find the complacency of the major parties on climate breakdown, which is just starting, the extreme position.

This is one of the more interesting graphs on CCP disciplinary enforcement I’ve seen in some time. “Hedonism and extravagance” are relatively well-defined offenses (essentially, abusing reimbursement policies and engaging in overly conspicuous consumption—this is why Chinese bureaucrats all wear Longines watches), whereas “formalism and bureaucratism” were, in the past, so poorly defined that they were effectively unenforceable. Since about 2018, there’s been a flurry of regulatory activity seeking to give those terms clearer definition, mainly focusing on “lack of concrete action when implementing top-down directives.” That’s still pretty vague to external observers, but the more interesting question is whether they can at least generate predictable standards of behavior to party insiders. The incredibly rapid growth of disciplinary cases against those offenses suggests, at least, that they’ve become well defined enough to permit large scale, top-down enforcement.
