The idea of fanfic writers who post on AO3 an archive born to protect fandom from legal persecution from IP holders turning into Anne Rice and threatening with DMCA takedowns...
if you’re told to take it down, you have to take it down. and if you don’t, well you better hope the author isn’t that serious about their work. because they are legally allowed to issue a DMCA takedown and can file for copyright infringement. yall have fun with that

just want to chime in as a doctor to correct that most urine is sterile in the sense the rest of you is “sterile” in the shower (everyone has microbes) unless you have a UTI lol. Your hands are dirtier. I still don’t piss in the shower though
piss isn't sterile and the shower water isn't going to be hot enough to sterilze the bottom of your tub

And then you wonder why so much AI generated content is being produced. At some point, fanfiction stopped being seen as a creative outlet that people share to bring themselves and others joy, and started being treated as a way to gain status within the fandom.
i keep seeing people referring to fic drives as work being shared without “reward” for the author and i have to be honest, it bothers me that people are posting on ao3 with their main motivation being recognition and reward. wanting comments and engagement is natural, but i think framing it as reward or a return for your work is kind of indicative that you don’t really understand why fanfiction exists to begin with. fanfiction exists as a way for authors to express themselves, explore characters and identities and try things out. it’s a creative outlet and you should be writing because you want to do it. not because you want the attention it brings. we lose the culture and motivation behind fandom practices when we commodify them.

no hate to op but genuinely none of the people asking this question are old enough/knowledgable in fandom history enough to remember WHY fic drives exist. they’re literally created to avoid fic purges from decimating fundamental texts to the fandoms
am I too woke of a fic writer to be a little conflicted about fics being downloaded to personal drives without the author’s knowledge and shared/read without the author gaining any site engagment or is this something I should brush off and get over /gen

feels like what a lot of newer ao3 posters really want to do is make their fics only available in patreon sort of deal- where you have to pay for access to them with engagement and comments and kudos- and that's what's going to finally kill off fandoms completely

then delete your account? lol it’s very strange that I’ve seen a select hand full react so oddly over a community’s perseverance of keeping an archive. No one is selling your fanfic. Chill.

am I being too harsh or "without the author gaining any site engagment" is absolutely stupid? ao3 is an archive, not a social media or a fic site. you shouldnt care about "gaining" anything.

in wind breaker terms it’s like when suo was gone from furin and everyone searching for him for two weeks
We estimate that service restoration for #AO3 will take around 2 weeks but it could be up to 4 weeks. We are hopeful that we will be able to bring the site back up in a degraded state sooner. Refer to our status page for updates: otwstatus.org/

you want people to use the anti site as an “alternative”? lmfao get lost
in light of ao3 exploding i’d like to remind everyone that squidgeworld.org is an alternative archive that works nearly exactly the same (just with a better tagging system 🫢) and many authors already crosspost between the two

that’s exactly how I’ve always interpreted it. It means there isn’t going to be some subversive commentary on it. That’s why I always use dead dove as a way to gauge to level of the tag.
Here is what the original creator of the tag said. A lot of people don't know the true definition of meaning behind it.
