One big issue with pointing blame at an individual from the perspective of someone outside of a team is the fact that there are infinite ways that a player can end up performing at a lower level than expected. Playing the wrong agent for their identity, style not fitting with team system, and strategic details outside of their control to name a few. It's better to focus on the broader decision making and strategy of a team when giving criticism rather than just looking at stats and blaming individuals unless you have the full picture. Anyone saying "bench X, fire Y" as a casual phrase to fix a problem of a team (outside of off season) doesn't understand the game at a high level and should be ignored.
