In a historic advancement for veterinary medicine, California wildlife rescuers successfully utilized sterilized tilapia fish skins to treat two adult black bears that sustained severe injuries during the catastrophic 2017 Thomas Fire. The bears had suffered debilitating third-degree burns across all of their paw pads, leaving them entirely unable to stand, walk, or forage.
Faced with deep, extensive wounds that would typically require many months of painful clinical isolation, a specialized medical team from the University of California, Davis, collaborated with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to implement a highly experimental protocol. Drawing inspiration from cutting-edge human burn treatments pioneered in Brazil, the veterinarians sutured processed tilapia skins directly over the scorched tissue of the animals' paws.
Tilapia skin is naturally abundant in type-1 collagen and maintains a high moisture content, allowing it to function as an optimal biological matrix. Once secured, these organic bandages provided immediate pain relief by shielding exposed nerve endings, accelerated deep tissue regeneration, and created a durable sterile barrier against opportunistic bacterial infections.
To safeguard the delicate fish-skin grafts from being licked or chewed off, the veterinary team wrapped the bears' paws in protective outer layers composed entirely of rice paper and corn husks. This creative measure ensured that if the bears ingested the wrappings, the materials would digest safely without causing hazardous intestinal blockages. The treatment yielded remarkable speed, enabling the bears to comfortably stand and bear weight within mere days of the operation.
Time was of the essence, as wildlife biologists needed to return the large predators to the wild before they could lose their natural instincts or habituate to human caretakers. Because the bears were scheduled for release during the winter hibernation cycle, wildlife officers went a step further by scouting remote territory and constructing cozy, artificial earthen dens deep within the forest. This allowed both bears to be released directly into a secure environment, where they could safely complete their final healing stages in the comfort of their native habitat.

Sharks spend their lives moving through parts of the ocean that can be difficult for scientists to monitor.
Researchers at the University of Miami and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution are turning their natural movements into research opportunities, helping us learn more about the changing conditions beneath the surface and better understand the ocean we all depend on.

Sharks are one of the most misunderstood animals on the planet. For decades they’ve been portrayed as ruthless predators, but the reality is far more fascinating.
They’re incredibly important to healthy oceans, and in many cases, far more afraid of us than we are of them.

A LAWNMOWER IS MORE DANGEROUS THAN A SHARK
Sharks kill around six people per year. Humans kill sharks and rays by the thousands every day.
Maybe it’s time to ask who should really be afraid of whom.
If you agree that sharks and rays need our attention, not our fear, help us spread the message. Share this video.

Losing a pet produces grief that is clinically comparable to losing a human family member, and a 2021 study in BMC Geriatrics found that older women who lost a companion animal experienced impacts on their physical health, daily routines, and sense of purpose that lasted for months.
The study explored the lived experience of pet bereavement in older women and found themes of profound loneliness, loss of daily structure, and a sense that a piece of their identity had died with the animal. The women described losing not just a companion but a reason to get up in the morning, a reason to walk, and a reason to talk.
The grief is often dismissed. "It was just a dog" is a sentence that pet owners hear from people who have never had the relationship, and the dismissal compounds the pain. Disenfranchised grief, the term psychologists use for grief that society does not validate, makes the mourner feel they have no right to their own pain, which delays recovery and deepens isolation.
The bond between a person and a pet is not a lesser version of a human bond. Brain imaging studies show that the same regions activated by looking at a photograph of a child are activated by looking at a photograph of a beloved dog. The attachment system does not check species. It checks connection.
If you know someone who just lost a pet and you are wondering whether to send flowers or a card, send it. The research says the grief is real, the loss is structural, and the person is mourning something the rest of the world keeps telling them is small. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3442…

Nova Scotia just got a visit from one of the ocean's gentle giants. A basking shark, second only to the whale shark in size... spent Friday evening drifting through Bedford Basin while a crowd gathered to watch. It's a filter feeder, not a threat, and sightings like this are a reminder of why healthy coastal waters matter.
Seen a shark you couldn't ID? Tell us! Every sighting adds up.

Not in Brussels? Not a problem! - Join the event remotely via Webinar (link in bio). “Shark Protection for Healthy Oceans” is an event hosted by Members of Parliament, Manuela Ripa (EPP) and Michal Wiezik (RENEW).
The program will focus on the critical impacts of the international shark fin trade on biodiversity and ocean health, the EU’s role in this trade, and the socioeconomic impacts on coastal communities and fisheries resulting from declining shark populations and the threats marine ecosystems are experiencing.
The link to join remotely as well as in person event registration can be found using sharkallies's link in Bio. Only guests who have completed the registration process will be able to enter the parliament building and attend the event in person.

Kroger promised to end battery cages like these in its supply chain by 2025.
It then broke that promise. It did so to save 1–2 cents per egg in costs.
Today most eggs sold at Kroger come from factory farms like this. Around 8 million hens are stuck in cages just to stock Kroger's shelves.
Amazon, Costco, Sprouts, McDonald's, and Subway have all moved away from these cages.
But Kroger says this is what its consumers want. Tell them it's wrong.

While the action on screen can be intense and entertaining, the real story is that most shark populations are under pressure from overfishing, bycatch, habitat loss, and the shark fin trade.
So enjoy Shark Week. Get hyped.
Just don’t let it scare you.

Rowdy, a 26-year-old gelding (about 80 in human years) owned by Melinda Miller, enjoys natural hydrotherapy each summer at Lake Pleasant, Arizona.
He swims and floats in the lake to relieve his arthritis. The buoyancy of the water provides joint relief without the impact of land exercise.
One year his owner added a floatie over his head. Rowdy learned to relax comfortably without his head submerging.
Videos of the senior horse floating have made him a local celebrity.

🤯 Rare “mermaid birth” caught on camera:
A baby was born completely enclosed in the intact amniotic sac, floating inside a translucent bubble like something out of a movie. This only happens in about 1 in 80,000 births and is more common in C-sections.
In many cultures across Europe and Russia, being “born in the caul” is seen as a sign of good luck or even special abilities.
One of the coolest things you’ll see today.

Sharing the water with sharks is awesome. A few ways to make it great for everyone:
- Move slowly. Calm, steady movement signals you belong here.
- Know their schedule. Dawn and dusk are peak feeding hours
- Skip the flashy jewelry.
- Just watch.
