the wheel of History is turning
My brave fellow Iranians, The Islamic Republic is weaker and more fragmented than ever. It is not the same regime that ruled Iran a year ago. Its missing leader and senior officials are afraid of the Iranian people. They know that a nationwide uprising can bring their rule to an end. This criminal regime and its Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) have dragged our country into war and put Iran’s future at risk. The IRGC controls much of the country, steals its wealth, and is responsible for much of the economic crisis and insecurity we face today. They have left our people without enough food, without security, and without hope for the future. They are willing to destroy Iran to stay in power. Our country has already suffered too much. We cannot allow more destruction. We must stand together and do everything we can to save Iran. We have a clear plan to end the Islamic Republic and manage the country after it falls. Our plan will maintain security and stability, protect people’s basic freedoms, and make sure their essential needs are met. To those serving in the military, police, and security forces: stand with the people, not the regime. Join the nation when the time comes to free Iran. Those who do so will be guaranteed safety and protection from reprisals. But those who continue to support the regime and commit crimes against our people will face justice under the law. This time, I call not only on military and government personnel, but on Iranians from every walk of life who have had enough of this regime and seek a free and prosperous future for our country. Join us. Contact my team directly through t.me/BarkhizIranBot on Telegram and sign up today for the National Cooperation Campaign to Save Iran. Together, we can bring the Islamic Republic to an end and build a new future of freedom, peace, and prosperity for Iran. Long live Iran Reza Pahlavi

it was hard enough to contribute intellectually to the world before AGI letting go of that aspiration, that duty, that expectation I think could actually be the path to rekindling the kind of intellectual and spiritual freedom that many of us have lost in the modern era. the doors will be wide open.
You might have 1–5 years to contribute intellectually to the world before AGI. What should you do with them? Excellent advice from @jaschasd (Anthropic) at Stanford. Skip Netflix tonight and watch this instead.

this is correct advice in a technical sense but it's also correct advice in a spend lots of money on tokens sense.
If you own a service, this week: Set up an agent with Daybreak Blue/Claude Cyber/GLM to read cloudtrail logs or a SIEM stream roughly every 5 minutes to look for suspicious activity. Page if it finds something. If your volume is WAY too high use a 2 stage pipeline with Jev or Decisions API to classify the activity before handing it to the cyber models. do it this week!

thanks I hate it
I never believed in "secret knowledge" until I acquired some and tried to excitedly share it with other people. I was immediately met with anger and derision. It was like a mental "block" appeared that kept people from accessing the understanding. They needed to shield themselves. There are some ideas that aren't meant to be known to everyone or else society would not function properly.

given it's hacktober, i ran a codex security scan on one of my codebases yesterday and apparently it used 100% of my weekly usage. not only that, the UX for exploring and managing findings is horrible, so I ended up not even bothering wasting my time reviewing most of its findings (most of which were irrelevant leftovers since the last time I ran it a few months ago) disappointing.

what is taking so long?? I barely bother using voice mode any more because it constantly interrupts.
it does still interrupt too much tbh. but I think (hope?) that bidi is enough of an unlock that they'll be able to fiddle with the knobs enough over the weeks and months ahead that this will ultimately get truly solved.

I wasn't really paying that close attention for most of my life, and I'm certain that many eras past have been worse, but it's hard not to be sad and concerned about how Stupid everybody has become the last decade+. The level of delusion and radicalization I've seen just in my own extended friend circle is shocking. I can see how for most it started from a reasonable place, but so many have just completely lost touch with reality. And there's nothing I can do. Nobody wants to hear it. You immediately become the Enemy if you suggest the narratives they believe might be wrong. See y'all in 2050.

the various derangement syndromes of our time have swallowed almost everybody. I suspect we'll just have to wait it out and hope we get to the other side in one piece 😔 xitter.cf/kenwarner/status/20607…

is November going to flatten the curve? somehow I suspect not.
During this red-teaming exercise, we also found a vulnerability that allows for unauthenticated remote code execution in Brotli, a widely-deployed compression library included in many pieces of software such as Node.js, Bun, and Envoy. The flaw could let an attacker run their own code on affected systems by sending or replying with malicious compressed data, without any need to create a user account. That is, an unpatched server that accepts compressed input could be taken over by a malicious client, and an unpatched client that accepts compressed input (such as “curl --compressed”) could be taken over by a malicious server. This root cause issue was actually fixed in the Brotli source code in February, but it wasn’t known at the time that it gave rise to a security vulnerability and there was no more recent release of Brotli. Since Brotli is built into other software, any software which includes this library needs to take the update too, followed by the users of that software. We disclosed the vulnerability to Brotli and other downstream projects such as Node.js, which released or are currently releasing security updates, and Brotli cut new release versions and published a CVE. More details on the patch and mitigations below: patchtheplanet.org/brotli

I’m not kidding I think you need to be exceptionally sociopathic and off your rocker to maintain a public presence in a modern media environment, much more so than in traditional tv news

A new interview series with @WalterIsaacson called The Builders launched this week. First two conversations are with Elon Musk and Peter Thiel. Definitely worth checking out.

The Guarantee: Inside the Fight for America’s Next Economy by @nataliefoster Universal Basic Income and its cousins have long been a common theme in the discourse about automation and accelerating returns to capital, going back long before AI. Such ideas have champions and detractors, and they both have valid points. My own position is that when a society achieves increasing wealth and sophistication, it obviously can and should make an increasing set of services common goods. Few object to the idea that everyone in a modern society should have access to clean water (looking at you, Flint, Michigan), or that all children should get to go to school. What about college? Some states have experimented with two years of free college; some countries, like Australia, have devised schemes for deferred payment that are far easier to swallow than college debt in the US. During COVID, we performed what amounted to large-scale tests of direct distribution and rent moratorium. The questions, then, are how far social guarantees should go and how they should be provisioned: food, housing, medical care, education, internet and computing, income, and even capital. @nataliefoster has been prominent in the political fight for an expansive version of such social guarantees, and she makes a compelling case for them. There are obvious contrasts between her vision and, say, that of @lindsey_brink, formerly of the Cato Institute, whose book I’ve also recommended—yet there are also surprisingly broad areas of agreement.
