Americans don't use WhatsApp because of a decision Apple made in 2013. We only know about it because the emails came out in court, and the whole thing came down to keeping your kids off Android.
It started with Eddy Cue, the guy who runs Apple's services. That April he emailed the team saying Apple really needed to put iMessage on Android. Google was reportedly trying to buy WhatsApp for $1 billion at the time, and Cue's pitch was that Apple already had the best messaging app, so why not make it the one the whole world used.
Craig Federighi, Apple's software chief, shut it down.
He asked how Apple was supposed to get Android users to leave WhatsApp when they didn't even have iPhone friends. So back in 2013, the guy running iPhone software was basically admitting WhatsApp already owned everybody who didn't have an iPhone. Then he got to what he was actually worried about. iMessage on Android would remove "an obstacle to iPhone families giving their kids Android phones."
Phil Schiller, Apple's longtime marketing boss, backed him up in another email thread in 2016, writing that putting iMessage on Android would hurt Apple more than help it. None of this was public until Epic sued Apple and the emails got pulled into evidence in 2021.
Now look at what that does to WhatsApp. The entire reason WhatsApp exists is that it works on any phone, so it wins wherever group chats are a mix of iPhones and Androids. Apple went the other direction on purpose. For years, every Android user in an American group chat showed up as a green bubble and their videos came through blurry, and the fix everybody landed on was buying another iPhone.
Tim Cook pretty much said this out loud in 2022. A reporter at a conference told him he couldn't send videos to his mom because she had an Android, and Cook told him to buy his mom an iPhone.
And it worked about as well as anything Apple has ever done. Nearly 9 in 10 American teenagers own an iPhone, and iPhones were 75% of phones sold at the big three US carriers in early 2026. If almost everyone you text has the same phone, an app whose whole selling point is working across phones has nothing to offer you.
Worldwide, Apple only sells about 1 in 5 phones. Most of the world's group chats stayed mixed, so they ended up on the one app that ran on everything, and WhatsApp blew past 3 billion users. Meta says more than 100 million Americans use it now too.
Apple finally added RCS texting with Android in 2024 and turned on encryption for it this May, and they still kept those messages green.
Apple basically let WhatsApp have the rest of the planet so it could keep American teenagers.

Nelly was PISSED when he heard the "Country Grammar" radio edit for the first time, but when his A&R explained that the edit was better than muting his original lyrics, he fell back, and it was still a hit that fans of all ages can sing 😂

My THOUGHTS on this @2chainz and Keith Lee interaction!
2 Chainz got into a DEBATE with Keith Lee after bringing up the BAD REVIEW Keith gave his restaurant, with Keith arguing that his reviews should reflect how REGULAR CUSTOMERS are treated, while 2 Chainz insisted celebrities EARN special treatment 😳👀
2 Chainz also questioned whether Keith’s strict diet as a former athlete affects his TASTE in food and how he judges restaurants.
“I’m an entertainer, and obviously we get perks that other people don’t get. That’s just period, my boy. I don’t stand in line at the airport. I don’t do none of that because I done worked my ass off to do this.”

AI use at the NBA level.
Simple stuff explained by Mazzulla but easily one of the more engaged high-level people using these tools, I'd wager.
Joe Mazulla says he uses AI everyday to help coach his team
“I use Claude everyday for coaching thoughts. I love Claude. I’m all in on Claude. It was beneficial in the offseason for my personal development and where I wanted to take things psychologically for our team.”
“I’ll throw in last year’s practice plan and be like, was this efficient? Because you don’t know in the present moment if it was an efficient practice plan or if it was an efficient use of your time. If you throw in, here’s our halftime process, how can our halftime process become more efficient? We watch film sometimes and it’s a reactive film session because we’re watching film of plays that already happened, not of plays that may happen.”
Radio Host: “But it is going to kill all of us, you do know that? It’s coming for all of us.”
“Something is coming for all of us. I just went to confession Monday so I’m in good shape.”
“I think it’s more just helping organize, helping become more efficient, helping understanding. I use it a lot just for conversation and riffs on, ‘Okay, here’s what I’m wrestling with. What does this look like from a psychological perspective? What is the research and the data?’ You can quickly get so much research and data on things. Are you verbalizing things? Can they be verbalized in a much more efficient way?”
“Like I talked about with practice planning, it really helps you test your processes that you think are efficient. Is our halftime process really the most efficient way to watch film getting ready for the second half? Is our pregame process the most efficient way to make sure our guys have retention of the game plan, understand what we need to do, and are in the right space mentally and psychologically?”
“As a coach, you develop these processes and rituals that you think give you the best chance to win. I think a platform like that tests your efficiency. Is this really the best way? How we watch film on a practice day, is the way we watch film, the template of each clip, the best opportunity to build retention and understanding? What does it look like to have the most efficient film session you can? What type of questions are you asking when you’re going through film? Do I ask the right questions to check for understanding and build retention?”
“I think it just really tests your processes. You may think you’re doing something the right way, but there’s definitely a more scientific or more efficient way of going about how to do things, and I think that gives us a platform that allows you to do it. Really, it was over the last year or so. Every offseason, and really this offseason, it was like, ‘Okay, let’s test all of our processes. Is our pregame film process the right way? Is our halftime film process the right way? Is our film room set up for learning the right way? How should our film room look?’”
“You’re constantly testing. You always ask, ‘Where are we getting better?’ I think the best way for coaches to get better is in the processes of how they go about doing stuff. Are they the most efficient way? It also helped with combining sports. I’ve always talked about soccer being a passion of mine to watch, and I got into a little bit of handball this year. So I was able to say, ‘Tell me the similarities between soccer, handball and basketball. What elements of play are involved in all three of those things, and how can that work in a five-on-five setting?’”
“To me, it tests your process. It tests your efficiency. It tests what you think you may know and how you can do it better.”
