Wigan fan but true
When Wakefield Trinity were relegated three years ago, the club didn't stop its vital community work. It continued giving opportunities and life chances to children, filling the gap left by local services destroyed by austerity Its remarkable current success isn't just on the rugby pitch — it's in the community, writes @JadeBotterill politicshome.com/opinion/art…

I cannot overstate how egregious it is for Egyptian authorities to arrest the ENTIRE NEWSROOM of an investigative journalism platform. We're witnessing one of the most serious press freedom escalations in Egypt in years. @TimepDC and 54 partners in solidarity with @matsda2sh ⤵️
NEW: Following the arrest of @matsda2sh's entire newsroom, TIMEP joins partners to condemn the escalating crackdown on the independent Egyptian investigative journalism platform & to call on authorities to immediately release the six detained journalists. timep.org/2026/09/30/global-…

Will Chancellor John Healey find the missing money that caused defence secretary John Healey to resign? And is there an alternative that provides national security without fuelling ever spiralling demands from the defence lobby? Me for The Lead this week - national.thelead.uk/p/the-le…

🇺🇸 New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani unveiled plans to sell essential groceries at prices 30% below typical retail rates through five city-owned stores, one in each borough. The discount will cover all fresh produce, meat, and seafood, along with 20 pantry, dairy, and refrigerated staples, including milk, cheese, and bread. Prices will be set at the beginning of each month and remain fixed throughout it, with no income restrictions for shoppers. The city has allocated $70 million to develop the stores and will cover rent and property taxes, while private contractors operate them. The first is expected to open in Hunts Point in the Bronx by late 2027, followed by La Marqueta in East Harlem by 2029. All five are planned to open before Mamdani’s term ends. The administration estimates the program could save an average household about $1,000 annually. The stores will not sell alcohol, cigarettes, lottery tickets, or hot food, partly to limit competition with neighborhood bodegas.
Mamdani: Today, I am proud to announce a collection of essential staples that will be predictably 30% cheaper at all five of our city-run grocery stores. This core set of goods will include all fresh produce, meat, and seafood, along with 20 other essential items like cheese, milk, and bread. Here's how it will work. Once a month, our five city-run grocery stores will set prices for this core set of goods at 30% below typical retail prices. No exceptions, no gimmicks. The savings will last for the entire month. That means no weekly fluctuations or sticker shock at the checkout line—not for our seniors living on fixed incomes, nor for the parents who rely on a regular supply of apple slices to keep toddler tantrums at bay.
