Today, we joined PKF Johannesburg in Melrose for the launch of its Automotive Industry Report, which explores the current state of South Africa’s automotive sector and what lies ahead.
As the conference gets underway, industry leaders, including BAIC South Africa CEO Anele Geza, Cars.co.za Managing Director Amasi Mwela and Hatfield Motor Group Managing Director Brad Kaftel are sharing their insights on the challenges and opportunities shaping the industry.
Vehicle exports to the US are down 74.4%, while the domestic market, at approximately 597,000 units, is up 15% in 2026. Chinese brands have also increased their market share from 4% in 2021 to roughly 20% in 2026, highlighting just how much the competitive landscape has changed.
What should the industry be watching?
Key priorities include stabilising import penetration, currently at 82.8%, reversing declines in local production and exports, securing successor models for locally manufactured vehicles and increasing local content from 38–40% towards 60%.As new brands enter the market and electrification gains momentum, the challenge is to move beyond import-led growth and strengthen local manufacturing, attract investment and build a more sustainable future for South Africa’s automotive industry.
