That young man deserves so much appreciation! Instead of turning away or simply standing by and filming such a heartbreaking sight, he stepped in to help, giving a life that was slowly fading a chance to survive. 🦈💗

Stop screaming “apartheid” in my ears and timeline. I am not oppressed by apartheid that ended even before I was born. Every misery I see around me is the result of bad ANC governance! Stop telling me excuses when I demand accountability from these old, wicked government leaders.

I’m sorry. Every SA has a Go Fund Me. I’m over it.
It’s no different than a RICO Racket.
You’re actually not teaching them self reliance. You’re teaching them how to manipulate the system so they can GRIFT the system.
We don’t feed wild animals for the same reason. It teaches them to BEG instead of forage.
You may think SA Refugees deserve the assistance because of what they went through. Their story is no different from any other refugee.
You’re trying to help. You’re teaching them bad habits.

Big sister Mwana leading little sister Mwezi!
We wondered how Mwana would react to the arrival of her new sibling. Although she is now three and a half, she seemed to think she was still a small baby who deserved to be treated as such. We worried she was in for a rude awakening.
But Mwana has really risen to the occasion. She’s still smarting over nursing, as Murera had been trying to wean her for months and now the matter is settled for her, but overall she has embraced her little sister. Here, she confidently leads Mwezi to the mud bath and then watches over her while she enjoys a mini wallow!
In case you missed the news: last Thursday, Murera gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. It was a seamless delivery, and mum, baby and big sister are all doing great.

In 2017, 21-year-old Stellenbosch University student Hannah Cornelius was carjacked after dropping off a friend in the early hours of the morning.
She was brutally gang-raped, stabbed in the neck, and mu*dered when a 37.5-kilogram rock was dropped on her head.
The details of what happened are deeply disturbing.
On May 27, 2017, Hannah and her friend, 22-year-old Cheslin Marsh, were sitting in her grandmother’s blue-and-white Volkswagen Citi Golf outside his residence in Stellenbosch, South Africa, saying their goodbyes.
Four men approached the vehicle and threatened them with a sharpened screwdriver and a knife through the open window.
Vernon Witbooi, Geraldo Parsons, and Eben van Niekerk forced their way into the car.
At approximately 3:40 a.m., the vehicle drove away with all five people inside.
Cheslin was forced into the boot while the group drove to a drug dealer’s home, where they smoked crystal meth before continuing through Stellenbosch.
At 4:34 a.m., CCTV footage captured Witbooi entering a petrol station and attempting to use Cheslin’s stolen bank card. The PIN he had been given was incorrect.
Near Kraaifontein, the men stopped and dragged Cheslin from the boot. They forced him onto the ground, beat him over the head with bricks, and left him unconscious.
Hannah was taken to an isolated paintball range, where she was gang-r*ped by multiple men over several hours.
She was then driven to Groenhof Farm, stabbed in the neck, and k*lled when a 37.5-kilogram rock was dropped onto her head twice.
Her body was discovered later that morning.
Cheslin eventually regained consciousness and managed to walk to the nearest home he could find. He survived, but was left permanently deaf in one ear.
Witbooi and Parsons were arrested that afternoon following a police chase. Van Niekerk and Nashville Julius were arrested the following day.
In November 2018, the Western Cape High Court sentenced Witbooi, Parsons, and van Niekerk to two life sentences each for Hannah’s r*pe and mu*der.
Julius received 22 years for robbery and kidnapping.
At the sentencing, Hannah’s father, Willem Cornelius, spoke words that captured the devastation experienced by her family:
“Our family died on the day Hannah died.”
Willem died on December 9, 2022.
Hannah’s mother, Anna, had been found dead in the South Atlantic Ocean in March 2018. Her death was ruled accidental.
And Hannah’s younger brother, who has autism, continued asking when his sister was coming home.
A young woman’s life was stolen in an act of unimaginable violence. Her family was left carrying a grief that no sentence could ever undo.
Hannah deserved a future filled with love, laughter, and possibility.
May her memory never be forgotten.
Ruben was born in a private zoo in the mountains of Armenia.
When the zoo’s owner died, the facility closed. The other animals found new homes, but nobody came for Ruben, a 10-year-old lion.
For the next six years, he lived alone in a concrete cell. His roaring gradually stopped. Those who checked on him heard only an occasional cry.
Eventually, Animal Defenders International (ADI) stepped in and arranged to rescue him.
Ruben was moved to a bear sanctuary in Armenia for treatment. Years of poor nutrition and almost no exercise had left him weak. His legs trembled when he walked, and veterinarians suspected spinal problems.
Because his transport crate was too large for a regular flight, a cargo airline generously flew him to freedom at no cost.
On August 23, 2023, after approximately 15 hours in the air, Ruben arrived at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary in South Africa.
For the first time in nearly six years, he could hear and see other lions.
And then something beautiful happened.
Ruben began roaring again.
The sanctuary staff say his roars have been growing louder ever since.
His new enclosure includes grassy slopes and a shelter with heated floors. Staff even gave him a bag of catnip, which he happily played with for a long time.
Ruben still faces serious challenges. Cataracts cloud his eyes, and sometimes his legs give way beneath him. He will need specialized care for the rest of his life.
But now, he is no longer alone.
He lives among other lions, enjoys the sunshine, and has finally found a place where he can feel safe.
After six years of silence and isolation, Ruben’s roar has returned.
And this time, the world is listening.

Why do the orphans each have their own "room" at night?
First, the reassuring part: a room of one's own doesn't mean sleeping alone. The orphans bed down on soft hay, surrounded by the comforting rumbles of the others, with a Keeper right beside them throughout the night. Neighbours often rumble to one another through the walls before settling down for sleep.
As for the separate rooms themselves, there's one main reason: they allow the Keepers to provide one-to-one care, feed each orphan during the night and closely monitor how much every individual is eating and how they're doing. Each orphan has its own cosy, secure space – close to the herd, but a space of its own.
As they grow older and need a little less support at night, they graduate to communal stockades, where they can enjoy the company of one another while also encountering nocturnal wild visitors that wander through.

We know of 97 calves born in the wild to our ex-orphans. How? Because they chose to bring their newborns home to the people who raised them.
Some make the pilgrimage from the wild within hours of giving birth. Others might return to our Reintegration Units a few weeks or months after. Each time, our Keepers are like proud grandparents, over the moon with happiness.
Yatta has done it four times. Melia twice. A few have even chosen to give birth amid the Unit - like Murera here, with her newest baby Mwezi.

Why is Redi trying to look white?
Redi Tlhabi, your obsession with dragging apartheid-era violence into every discussion about Zulu identity is intellectually lazy. The Zulu nation is bigger than the IFP, bigger than apartheid and bigger than your political narratives. We will not spend eternity apologising for our identity or seeking permission to embrace our heritage. Stop confusing Zulu consciousness with political manipulation. Our identity is not yours to police.

It’s unfortunate. I think most of the refugees are honest and hard working people.
The problem is there are always the fringes of a group who will exploit a situation.
What gets me are the people who are in South Africa using it. There are some in the US which will be exposed in time.
Don’t stop believing that there are good people who need help. There are. However there are some who will take advantage of you.

Wonderful news: Murera has given birth to a baby girl this morning! Her daughter entered the world bathed in the light of a near-full moon, perfect in every way. We’ve named her Mwezi, which means moon in Swahili.
Murera chose to give birth in her stockade, the place that has been her nighttime sanctuary all these years. Her delivery couldn’t have been more seamless – in fact, by the time the Keepers heard the rumbles and rushed to her side, it was all over! Mother and baby are doing very well, while Mwana is already proving to be an excellent and attentive big sister.
More to come, but we're filled with joy and wanted to share Mwezi’s first moments with you. (Word is already out amongst the elephants – this morning, every wild-living Umani orphan showed up to meet the newest member of their family!)
Congratulations to our extraordinary Murera: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/o…
