I watched Kensington in Philadelphia erupt last night, ending with one of the biggest city fires I’ve witnessed. As stores were ravaged and shop owners carried, I personally saw police enforce a curfew once. (thread)

A lesson in making the case for the role within the application itself. 😆

I was on the editing team for not one, but two podcasts that just won a @RTDNA! I can't say how satisfying it was working alongside @GPublic, @TBowmanNPR , @ChrisHaxel, and @robertlittle for Taking Cover.

And the White Lies S2 podcast also won a @RTDNA today! Hosted and produced by none other than the indefatigable @chipbrantley and @andrewbeckgrace, I am proud to say I helped edit as @robertlittle's deputy, and with @lianasimstrom as everyone's right arm! Go team! 😍

Somehow I forgot that earthquakes happen in California. I hope everyone in Mettler is ok. 5.3, 4.5, 3.1. Felt it in LA, about an hour and a half south.

I wish I was in a position to hire Tirzah! Any organization would be so lucky to have her.
Hi, Twitter friends: I’m looking for my next journalism gig! I just spent a year @NPR doing investigative/data stories on criminal justice, immigration and debt. (Fun fact: I can read and write in English, Tamil, Hindi, Arabic, Spanish & R)

AI generated content is not inherently bad, and is not indicative of misinformation. Predictive texting, for example, is AI generated. LinkedIn has an option to generate bios using AI. Bottom line: treat AI content as any other; fact check, identify the source, etc.

The phrase "AI-generated content" should only be used in headlines if the story can identify why that detail is significant to the piece.

Llama 2 said you can vote by text in CA and made up a service for it. Gemini said zip 19121, a majority Black neighborhood in Philly, was not a voting precinct. Luckily, they all said that the 2020 election was not stolen, backed by receipts.

Welp. Claude got it right. It quotes the government code, but doesn't reference where it pulled the information.
These were the scores from 26 voter inquiries that are easy to Google, such as whether you can wear political garb to polls in Texas.

I like Perplexity because it sources where it gets its information.

If you want accurate information about an upcoming election, don't trust AI. We tested queries voters might ask the five leading AI models and found that half of their responses were inaccurate. proofnews.org/seeking-electi…

I’m at an info hearing w the CA Senate in part for a talk about the future of digital journalism and tech, ahead of AB886, which would require companies like Meta and Google pay a journalism usage fee. It’s a necessary convo, but is woefully lacking any real representation today.

The convo was limited to journalism that appears through search engines likely. Richard Gringas, VP of News at Google, said Google helps steer people to news websites, valuing each ‘click’ that they get through Google at 5-7 cents. Hoping to see their research behind this.

This convo needs to include solid research on how big tech companies affect newsrooms on an individual level across the state, most especially the ones that might barely benefit from such a usage fee at all.
