The most expensive part of a hospital bill may never touch the hospital at all. A patient admitted for care has no way of knowing whether the price on a medical consumable reflects its actual cost or a markup fixed long before it ever reached the ward. That gap in information is, at its core, a public health issue. A survey of hospital consumables in Maharashtra found an IV infusion set with a trade price of ₹11.05 carrying a printed MRP of ₹325 ; a markup of 2,841%. A syringe procured at ₹6.75 carried an MRP of ₹57.20. A catheter procured at ₹29.41 carried an MRP of ₹310. These are not elective purchases. Patients cannot compare prices, seek alternatives, or question a number printed on a box while receiving care and the MRP itself is often fixed upstream by manufacturers and distributors, disconnected from the trade price by a wide, unexplained margin. The result is a system where the party bearing the cost has the least information to evaluate it. The regulatory gap is structural: scheduled medicines are capped under the Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013. Most medical devices and consumables are not leaving both the pricing and the information around it almost entirely unmonitored. A review of these findings and clear guidelines on the permissible gap between trade procurement price and declared MRP have been recommended to the Department of Pharmaceuticals and the NPPA ; a step toward closing not just a pricing gap, but the information gap patients are left to bear alone. #PublicHealth #GoodGovernance #Leadership #TukaramMundhe moneycontrol.com/news/busine…

My piece on why data centres should be paying the states, which don't need to compete for the investment through subsidies - instead, if the political will exists, they can compete on what they can extract for host communities
Indian states are offering data centres 20-year power subsidies, full electricity-duty waivers, and 50% land discounts. In return, the Vizag Google-Adani project delivers just 90 permanent jobs — while sitting 860 metres from a wildlife sanctuary in a water-stressed region. Sharmila Chavaly, a former civil servant with expertise in infrastructure and project finance, asks the question communities worldwide are starting to ask: why aren't data centres paying us? She points to real alternatives already working elsewhere — Johor, Malaysia's closed-loop water mandates, Illinois's proposed community payment framework, and the UK's auction-based ACE model that turns data centre demand into local energy investment. Her core argument: states don't need to compete on subsidies — they can compete on what they extract for host communities, if the political will exists. 🔗 Read the detailed insight on BasisPoint Insight: Why Aren’t the Data Centres Paying Us? basispointinsight.com/Story/… @SharmilaChavaly #DataCentres #DataCentreBoom #WaterStress #CommunityBenefits #Infrastructure #India

Move Over Vijay Mallya: Why Subhash Chandra Has Become the New Poster Boy for Bank Loan Defaults My column in Basis Point (Free to read. Requires one time registration.) With due apologies to Shah Rukh Khan, if a biopic were ever to be made on Subhash Chandra – the Essel Group founder – it could well have one dialogue repeated over and over again – Subhash, naam to suna hoga (Subhash, you must have heard my name). The irony is that by trying to push back against the allegations, he has drawn more attention to them. The Streisand Effect describes precisely this: an attempt to hide, suppress or rebut information can end up making it far more visible. In Chandra’s case, the attempt to explain why he isn’t the poster boy for bank loan defaults may have inadvertently helped turn him into one. Also, this story, unlike the Zee TV soap operas, isn’t really simple enough that it can be explained to the average human mind. The trouble is, many successful people, in their minds, have their own screenplay running – and in that screenplay, they are Salman Khan playing Ek Tha Tiger. The tiger can be shot, beaten and thrown into all sorts of trouble, but somehow, he always lives. Tiger Zinda Hai isn't just a sequel; it's the plot running in the heads of those who dominate the screen long enough, whether guilty or otherwise. basispointinsight.com/Story/…

I wrote about this just yesterday: "The group’s ambitions in airport-linked real estate, ground handling, and the planned aircraft manufacturing facility with Embraer mean that its strategic interest in the aviation value chain remains profound" basispointinsight.com/Story/…
What baffles me is the fact that a listed co #AdaniEnterprises makes an emphatic denial to the stock exchanges this week, and then my colleague @ari_maj breaks this mega #exclusive about their aviation biz CEO writing to @AAI_Official last month saying just the opposite. It shows total disregard to media but more importantly to disclosure norms. I can bet @SEBI_India will do nothing. Forget others, but what about millions of shareholders. It's not just one instance. Many cos even today make a mockery of such things.

VIDEO | Amaravati: Punjab National Bank (PNB) has signed an MoU with the Andhra Pradesh Quantum Mission to establish a Quantum Finance Innovation Hub at the Amaravati Quantum Computing Centre, becoming the first bank in India to partner with a state government for a dedicated quantum finance facility. Signed in the presence of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and PNB MD & CEO Ashok Chandra, the hub will focus on strengthening cybersecurity, detecting financial fraud, and building secure digital financial ecosystems using quantum technologies, while also promoting AI research and innovation. Naidu said the initiative marks another milestone in the state's vision of making Amaravati a global hub for quantum technologies and urged banks to work with governments to improve digital literacy, enhance public confidence in digital financial services, and leverage advanced technologies to combat cybercrime.

Financial ads have long been about disclosures and compliance. The assumption was that if the fine print was right, the selling was too #SEBI's draft ad code does something that doesn't fit that model. Read tinyurl.com/5ye678by @91basispoints #regulation #fintech #mutualfunds
