For those who don’t agree that the vaccinated can return to pre-pandemic normal, I ask: What should we all do? Perpetual masking? Forever not dining out, avoiding large weddings & indoor gatherings, etc? Virtually everything has risk, and zero covid is not a viable strategy.

In Catalonia 🇪🇸, 6yo wore masks in schools but 5yo did not A brilliant team used this to see what effect mask wearing had on #COVID19 transmission Finding: No difference between the two groups Conclusion: No meaningful effect of masking school children papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.…

Kids are locked out of school, locked out of learning, locked out of their childhood. Celebrities and media personalities and hypocritical politicians are partying like it’s 2019. That should disgust everyone.

If you consider yourself to be (a) evidence-based, (b) open minded, and (c) are advocating for ongoing masking of kids all day, please read this article and consider.
"Imposing on millions of children an intervention that provides little discernible benefit, on the grounds that we have not yet gathered solid evidence of its negative effects, violates the most basic tenet of medicine: First, do no harm." theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv…

The widespread availability of vaccines also raises an ethical question: Should children suffer to protect unvaccinated adults — who are voluntarily accepting Covid risk for themselves and increasing everybody else’s risk, too? Right now, the U.S. is effectively saying yes.

Decide on your metric for changing masking children to optional @CDCgov; I suggest 8-12 weeks after the 5-11 year old vaccine was available (date was November 4); please stop deep cleaning not fomite spread; let's treat kids with reverence as they are future & had hard time

Just as I advocated for mask use when needed, I'm going to join @j_g_allen in advocating for ending mask rules when no longer needed. In my mind, that's after kids 5-11 have a chance to get vaccinated. /1
"This also isn’t about whether masks work. They do. But as with all control measures, there is a time and place for them. We shouldn’t extend controls beyond what’s necessary." My latest in @PostOpinions. washingtonpost.com/opinions/…

Meanwhile, mask mandate in place at my 98% vaccinated gym, and masking at my kids’ outdoor, spaced PE for school. Isn’t good public health looking at the whole picture? @MonicaGandhi9

Have not seen any new compelling data even with delta (has been out since early March when 1st identified in India) to need to mask outdoors; ventilation so effective wsj.com/articles/take-off-yo…

Note the kids masking did nothing to prevent transmission here. Also, all of the kids had no or very mild symptoms. The problem was the unvaccinated adult.

Did you hear vaccinated people with Delta “have just as much virus in their nose so are just as infectious as unvaccinated”? Turns out vaccinated people have significantly less culturable virus present at the same Ct count They are LESS INFECTIOUS 💥 medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

We tolerated a lot of over the top mitigation on children for whom COVID is no riskier than other respiratory viruses because of the "could infect grandma" concern. Now 90.4% of seniors are vaxed at least one dose and the others have made their choice. Give kids normal life.

By the way, this guidance means no unvax person has to make outside as per the science. This is good to be aligned with WHO who has been so right on so many things (natural immunity, children <5 don't need to mask, no outside masking unless crowded) wsj.com/articles/take-off-yo…

Following the European Paediatric Infectious Disease (@ESPIDsociety) conference, near universal consensus on #COVID19, that children: -Do not drive transmission -Are more at risk from collateral damage than COVID disease -Can be vaccinated, but should not be prioritised globally

My 10yr old went to his first outdoor, mask op., bday party yesterday in a year. Joy was palatable, parents had tears in their eyes. And this from a group that had all year in person school. We have to stop underestimating the value of returning to normal at this point.
Kids’ immediate & longterm health hinge on adults weighing harms of pandemic restrictions against hazards of COVID-19. Even after restrictions go, full extent of #mentalhealth toll won’t show up for years. Addressing it now is critical & will save lives nytimes.com/2021/05/06/well/…
