Patrick Stewart's entire body of work, but as Picard in particular, is something that connects the person I am today with who I was as a kid. It collapses time for me. I still have the same awe and fascination with his performance and belief that it represents the best of us.

I’d been dating an MTA man off & on over a period of like 6 years. We basically stopped seeing each other bc of Congestion Pricing. He already pays it plus bridge tolls to get from his home in East NY to the depot in Harlem where he works. Coming to visit me inside the zone a few times per week as well, not to mention driving for our formerly frequent weekend getaways to AC became a hardship & no way he’d ever let me pay instead

maybe i'm misunderstanding but there are plenty of examples of useless/harmful things being "worth" something to somebody. of course what constitutes a perpetual ditch is debatable, but some examples (e.g. that chicago billionaire paying an army of rat-feeders) seem clear.

The joke is that it's a worthless task, but if it's actually worthless then it doesn't raise GDP in principle (there are certain ways it might still temporarily raise measured GDP).

like it seems like the point isn't that gdp is fake or whatever so much as it is a criticism of "growth" as a political goal. as opposed to more democratic input in the economic sphere and in how wealth is used/the externalities thereof
