HISTORICAL CONTEXT: Today's decision by @CAgovernor @GavinNewsom to commute California's death row is the single largest grant of death-row clemency in U.S. history and the largest reduction in the U.S. death-row population since Furman v. Georgia struck down all existing death penalty statutes in 1972. Furman vacated the death sentences of 630 prisoners across the United States. Today's proposed grant of universal clemency will remove 538 people from death row. The next largest reduction in the U.S. death row population came in 1976 when the U.S. Supreme Court declared mandatory death penalty statutes to be unconstitutional. Those rulings, in Woodson v. North Carolina and Roberts v. Louisiana, took 326 people in ten states off death row. Governor Newsom's grant of universal clemency surpasses President Lincoln's commutation of 264 Dakota tribesmen after the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862 as the largest single act of death-penalty clemency. Lincoln's commutations, however, still left 39 death sentences in place, leading to the largest mass execution in U.S. history. Previously, the largest modern grant of death-row clemency was on January 10 and 11, 2003 when Illinois Governor George Ryan pardoned four death-row prisoners and commuted the death sentences of 167 others, clearing the state's death row and leading to the state's subsequent abolition of the death penalty on March 9, 2011.

sean lock could see right through russell brand's facade, even in the face of people trying to defend him and talk sean down, he just knew there was more than what meets the eye

@mb_ghalibaf
Conscience or the cost of living, Americans said NO TO WAR, and we endorse this message. If the US govt betrays their public will to serve international paymasters and blackmailers, it will learn our NO comes with a Nightmare.

1/2 The survivors in Doe I v. Sabeti were “persecuted and denied justice by both regimes,” the court found, concluding that an “unbroken chain of repressive regimes” has existed in #Iran since the early 1970s.

1 in 4 women in the UK have been raped or sexually assaulted since the age of 16 6 in 7 rapes against women in the UK are carried out by someone they know
5 in 6 women who are raped in the UK don’t report it to the police
Fewer than 3 in 100 rapes recorded by UK police in 2024 resulted in someone being charged that same year It is an abhorrent crime committed by cowards. Every perpetrator put in prison is a blessing.

Russell Brand is officially a rapist & sex abuser The women who came forward should not be forgotten, it takes enormous courage to speak up The passage of time does not erase the possibility of justice This is about accountability, not celebrity
 There will be others…

Rape convictions are exceptionally rare, this is why today's guilty verdict one one count of rape in the Russell Brand case is so significant. I hope it will give a lot more victims the courage to come forward and take their abusers to court.

Quite revealing that Labour will work happily with the Tories or even Reform but are determined to turn Green Party opposition to a genocide into a local political football. Andy Burnham. Keir Starmer. The Labour Party still feels very Peter Mandleson. Join.greenparty.org.uk
🟢 EXCL: Understand Green cllrs on Havant Council have submitted a motion of no confidence in the Labour leader after Labour pulled out of the power sharing deal over the ZIR motion. The Havant Greens had said they recognised problematic elements of the motion but denied it was anti semitic and said they could not ask the party leadership to reject it as it was voted for democratically by members. Havant was ran by a “rainbow coalition” of Labour, Greens & LDs. Current make up of HBC: Reform - 9 Labour - 7 Conservative- 5 LD - 5 Greens - 5 Independent- 4 Plus one seat vacant due to by elex

This ruling offers hope to torture survivors in Iran under both the Shah & the Islamic Republic and sends a powerful message that decades of repression & fear cannot stand in the way of justice & that courts can still ensure that accountability for victims remains w/in reach. 5/5

which there must be accountability, regardless of the political opinions of either the accused or the victim. @amnesty documented the systemic use of torture under the Shah and found human rights deteriorated drastically after the 1979 Revolution. 4/5
