President William Howard Taft at the Texas State Fair in Dallas, 1909. He was on his way to El Paso/Juarez for a meeting with Mexican President Porfirio Díaz. He was not the first sitting U.S. President to visit Texas: Benjamin Harrison visited in 1891. That car! @BeschlossDC

American Poet T.S. Eliot was born #onthisday in 1888. Eliot’s work includes the novel The Waste Land and many religious poems and plays. His children's book, Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, was made into the popular stage musical, Cats. He was awarded the 1948 Nobel Prize in Literature ‘for his outstanding, pioneer contribution to present-day poetry’. His memorial stone can be found in Poets’ Corner and adjoins memorials to Henry James and the poets of the First World War, and the grave of Alfred, Lord Tennyson.

T. S. Eliot was born on 26 Sept. 1888. This watercolour portrait, though sometimes attributed to the English painter & art historian R. H. Wilenski - famous for "The Modern Movement in Art" (1927) - was in fact painted by the Polish artist Katerina Wilczynski (1894-1978) in 1946.
