I am thrilled to share that I have joined the faculty in the Department of Urology at UCSF!
I am so grateful for the support of my exceptional mentors, colleagues, and trainees who have contributed to this milestone.
Looking forward to what’s ahead for the Chesner Lab!

A milestone of our photopharmacology ERC project, just up on bioRxiv! Light-dependent control of network activity in human brain tissue of patients with epilepsy &/or brain tumors using lidocaine photoswitches & a novel photocaged propofol. 1/2

Did you see him help someone?
Did you see him try to run?
Did you see them six-on-one?
Did you see them take his gun?
Did you see that it was done?
Did you see him get shot a dozen
times in broad daylight?
Do you think they'll kill again?
If you're at #Sfn2025 , check out posters from my labmates!!
🧠 The Cai Lab will be at #SfN25!
Be sure to stop by the poster sessions to check out @Hailey_lr's work on decision-making, Zach's work on stress & the amygdala, @ZoeChristenson's work on seizures, Alexa's work on cocaine seeking, and Sandra's work on context representations 🤓

Such a cool study showing the involvement of astrocytes in memory!
Just out! “The astrocytic ensemble acts as a multiday trace to stabilize memory.” We identified astrocytic ensembles that link experiences across days to stabilize memory nature.com/articles/s41586-0…. New astrocyte tools are openly available at Addgene: addgene.org/Jun_Nagai/. 1/8

Working with trainees is a highlight of my own research and a main goal of the New York Memory Hub. I'm looking forward to a great afternoon of discussion with a group of brilliant trainees. Space is limited, register soon!
🤔Did you know we're hosting a trainee event the day before the first annual New York Memory Hub conference?
Trainees, join us in the afternoon of September 25 for lively discussion about learning and memory geared toward YOU!

New paper out in @CellReports! Led by @susie_feng, we found that chronic epilepsy in mice drives distinct synchronization deficits in hippocampus and MEC, with early changes in HPC and late-onset changes in MEC that align with progressive memory deficits.

New preprint from the lab! @laurenmvetere found disrupted MEC-hippocampal synchronization that paralleled the emergence of memory deficits in the 3xTg mouse model of AD pathology!
Check it out and let us know what you think.
Interested in how neural communication breaks down in a model of Alzheimer's pathology?
In a new preprint, we found desynchronization in medial entorhinal–hippocampal circuits that coincided w/ the onset of spatial memory deficits in 3xTg mice. (1/6)

ALT The title and authors of the manuscript are displayed alongside the bioRxiv lab logo and the Shuman lab logo, which features three blue overlapping oscillations. The title is: “Medial entorhinal-hippocampal desynchronization parallels the emergence of memory impairment in a mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease pathology.” The author list is: Lauren M Vetere, Angelina M Galas, Nick Vaughan, Yu Feng, Zoé Christenson Wick, Paul A Philipsberg, Olga Liobimova, Antonio Fernandez-Ruiz, and Denise J Cai.

🌟 Cai Lab @Nature paper alert! In new work led by @mysteriousjoe_, we find that rest periods after learning not only stabilize new memories BUT ALSO integrate new memories with older ones from days past! (1/9)

📣 New Cai Lab paper in @CellReports!
We show that a stressful experience can produce different types of memories! We also find that the basolateral amygdala (BLA) & ventral hippocampus (vHC) differentially contribute to these memories 🧠
