Let's hope this ONE TIME it doesn't just allow us to make LLMs even more complicated, to increase capabilities even more, and make them even more incomprehensible
interpretability might be the most important scientific problem in the world right now, as I don't think we can solve alignment if we don't know what we're building. I think I have good news about it. I co-authored early work in mechanistic interpretability at OpenAI and came away pessimistic, because neural networks appeared to fold into arbitrary tangled knots. years later, I started openai's first large-scale automated interpretability project, finding about 2% of neurons legible with the primitive tools we had with modern agentic tools and a much closer look, the picture looks totally different. the vast majority in models up to trillions of parameters are legible, and their circuits beautiful. many famous examples of tangled neurons turned out to be misunderstood. The roadblocks I expected mostly aren't there. I now think ambitious interpretability will be solved by the time we need it most, and possibly quite soon, as automated scientists keep improving. it may be a bitter lesson for interpretability: the simple thing, at absurd scale, works already-clean.goodfire.com/

I'm always impressed at how well our dog has classified all the objects in our house as "chew toy" and "not chew toy"

I'd raise it to a 35% chance now
I think there's maybe a 20% chance within the next year that the entire internet will simply no longer be available for a week or longer Think hard about what would happen in that scenario and make sure you can cope, whatever that entails

that feeling when a website has a broken login process, so you're forced to admit guilt by clicking on "forgot password" even though you know exactly what your password is "just ditsy old me again, always forgetting my passwords"

Ok folks, informal poll: use the little browser app at the link below to say how you think the sets of physical systems, living beings, and minds fit together in a Venn diagram: three-circles.space.fast/

I wrote a book, and it is finally here! And it is a book about something nobody ever written, even when thousands of people use these things every day. Higher Order Functions - these are functions that either accept functions as parameters, or return functions, or both. They are extremely powerful form of abstraction, that replace not only most of design patterns, but also can simplifty algorithms. This is the core focus of my book. On hundred or so of algorithms I am showing, how HOFs can make many algorithms (I picked ones from operations research, but the lesson is universal) easier to update, reason about, and reuse. If you are a curious developer or SW architect, who wants to dramatically simplify your algorithms while making them more universal, without sacrificing performance, this is a book for you. In 3 weeks from now, you will be able to order it.

People like sbf and holmes never apologize because they have a loosey-goosey thinking style, which means: 1. They lack insight into their mistake, as the "wrongness" was very diffuse 2. An apology only helps strategically if you articulate your mistake well, but #1 prevents that

"big keyboard" doesn't want you to know this, but: the option/command/ctrl keys on the right side of your laptop are totally different than the ones at the left side of the keyboard at an OS level, with a little ai help you can make those do completely different things for you

agree that simply being a giant shameless liar like holmes, sbf does not make someone an interesting/noteworthy person, I wish our culture would stop treating them that way (that said, I admittedly find it hard to look away from holmes' unique brand of weirdness lol)
nathan fielder has an almost incomprehensible film making talent and he’s wasting it on some quite boring subject matter. there is nothing very interesting about elizabeth holmes or billy evans

it's funny how we judge the caliber of tweet ideas by how many likes they get, and every once in a while a really dumb tweet goes viral and then everyone writes harsh comments, because you have been involuntarily annointed as the world expert on that type of tweet for that day
