Indeed. This strike was unnecessary. Constructive engagement happens in a timely fashion, not after the expiration of a contract and a three week extension. Both parties in a labor negotiation have an obligation to make contact negotiations a priority.

Strike deadline looms for The Cleveland Orchestra musicians

Time is waning for The Cleveland Orchestra and its musicians to reach a new contract. The musicians could strike at midnight if a deal isn't reached by tomorrow.

It is extremely unfortunate that management has agreed to meet with musicians only once since September 14. Clearly, the orchestra musicians are not a top priority of the current administration of the Musical Arts Association. @ClevelandAFLCIO @ohioaflcio @AFLCIO @The_AFM

AFM Statement on the Passing of Dolly Parton: “Before she was an icon, Dolly was a working musician,” says Tino Gagliardi, AFM - American Federation of Musicians International President. “Dolly never forgot the musicians who helped bring her music to life. By standing firm for solidarity and treating every player with dignity, she elevated our entire profession.” “Throughout her 58 years as a proud member in good standing of Local 257, Nashville Musicians Association, she set the gold standard for supporting her band and fellow musicians. Dolly and her team consistently filed AFM union contracts for gigs, sessions, and tours, ensuring that the bands, singers, and studio musicians working alongside her received the benefits of union membership,” says Dave Pomeroy, President Local 257.
