Kenyan Gen Zs handled artistic freedom not as a passive right but as an active, multifaceted strategy. They synthesized visual art, music, literature, and digital innovation to fuel a resistance movement that was as culturally rich as it was politically potent. They proved that in the face of repression, art is not a sidebar to protest; it is the very medium through which a generation claims its voice, forges its identity, and writes its history. The institutional scaffolding around Muhoozi has matured alongside his personal profile. The Patriotic League of Uganda, rebranded in 2024 from an informal network of birthday rallies and fan clubs known as the “Muhoozi Project”, now runs village-level structures, community clean-up campaigns, and youth roadshows, and openly courts the same rural base the National Resistance Movement (NRM) has cultivated for four decades. It functions less as a political party than as an insurance policy: it absorbs potential rivals into patronage, builds a loyalty network running parallel to the NRM’s own, and softens the ground for a hereditary handover by presenting it as continuity rather than rupture. Lula has won the second round of the Brazilian election with 51.79% of the vote, beating the far-right son of Jair Bolsonaro, Flávio. The US, which has long held its thumb on the scales of Brazilian democracy, has not yet responded to the result. mondediplo.com/2026/10/09bra…

Six years later, we remember #EndSARS and the young Nigerians who took to the streets demanding an end to police brutality, the voices that called for change, and the lives forever marked by what happened. We’ve put together a collection of stories from The Republic that revisit the movement, the people behind it, and the Nigeria we are still fighting for. With ~100 days to Nigeria’s next presidential election, how different are the ideas of Nigeria’s prominent politicians? Our latest at @republicjournal argues that neoliberalism has become so dominant in Nigerian politics that we’ve stopped seeing it as an ideology. rpublc.com/story/2026/10/04/…

Kenyan seers once advised sending the brightest youth to study colonial systems and reclaim sovereignty. Instead, those educated elites moved into the master's house. Alienated by an education that prioritized individual status over community, they now rely on private solutions, gated walls, private schools while public systems collapse. Did the Kenyan elite become the very obstacle to the independence they were meant to secure?
