Mao Zedong was certainly a dictator, French footballer Kylian Mbappé was right about that, but the label still feels inadequate for a man who was responsible for the deaths of tens of millions of Chinese.
He was a mass murderer, one of the worst tyrants of the twentieth century, in a super-league alongside the likes of Hitler, Stalin and Pol Pot. When he died in 1976, after endless and barbaric campaigns and purges, his legacy was a traumatised and impoverished land of fear and paranoia.
Mbappé's jokey comments were not about this brutal history, but the result of an internet meme, a video circulating online that placed his face on images of Mao.
'[The meme] that makes me laugh the most, it's the one where there's a video of a guy, I think it's a Chinese dictator,' he said on a podcast interview.

When you tell a Quebec Foid that your family first traces your Canadian ancestors to the "south shore" and that "you remember"

Everyone seems to be talking about these fun Quebec chansons à réponses from Soirée Canadienne in the 70s.
To Québecers: English Canadians are not mocking this tradition, but admiring it.
I think the fascination is that in our fractured, atomized society, we can see a beautiful expression of real community. Everyone, from kids to grandparents, knows the words and sings them together.
The joyfulness of the tradition is also a wonderful antidote to our hyper cynical age.
And the authenticity of the music itself is a beautiful contrast to the auto tuned and hyper engineered noise that passes for a lot of today’s popular music.
It’s obvious these songs were passed on from generation to generation, and represent a sense of shared culture and love of home. They make us nostalgic for a simpler time of shared meaning and identity.

Oh these Quebec folk songs keep getting better and better! Who could have imagined Québécois music going viral on the X timeline?
This beautiful kind of rustic village music is well overdue for a comeback!

Hey @Hostinger - You're supposed to be the cool guys from Europe !
Why on earth would you do this ? Nobody is calling it 'Super Intelligence' except for one profoundly pathetic and incompetent narcissist.
