I have recently finished Justinian by @peter_sarris A thoroughly enjoyable read, this in-depth exploration of the long life & turbulent reign Justian Augustus details not only the rise & rule of Justinian but also provides insights into the life & outlook of Procopius and how his writings help us understand the era. I liked it. Although I’m not especially keen on Justinian, I found myself entertained and invested in his story despite already knowing much of it. The book tackles the controversial topic of the extent to which Justinian’s expansion of the empire impacted the later 7th century decline especially well, in addition to the religious controversies of Justinian’s time. It is peppered with interesting facts that had me looking up the references & wanting to learn more. Such as the apparently ancient appearance of the excubitors and the use of Greek in official documents & laws. It is hard to see how this is not now the go-to book for those wanting to learn about the emperor. amzn.to/49hOOqd
