54. An Injury to All: The Unmaking of the British Working Class by @ewangibbs. This variegated portrait of working class Britain since the 1960s is as an urgent rejoinder to myths that plague our current political discourse, restoring workers as agents of their own history.

If anybody needed confirmation that Leith is beyond saving, saw a grown adult and a clear incomer last night wearing a half and half Hibs and Ghent scarf. A high scorer on the gentrification bingo card.

Sentences you should never hear. Sentences that bring satisfaction to the most inane dullard Barclaysmen which southern England has to offer. Sentences that signal the end of all that is good and sacred.
Sentences you’ve never heard before: AFC Bournemouth have beaten AC Milan.

Spot on. A deeply overrated, dull, uninspiring musician who seems to do a lot of hanging on musically and socially.

An old boy in the street with a paper. Seriously, when did you last see this?
What has gradually disappeared over the last ten years without people really noticing?

Sometimes theatre throws up performances where you can almost see the actor ‘act’. At other times the actor totally inhabits a character such that you really get sense of who that character is (for example, see @markthannah ‘Athens’ monologues). Scott is 🔥 here. Beautiful.
Andrew Scott delivers this speech too slowly; I know some viewers will hate the way he breaks up the verse. AND YET even in spite of that I think this is the best delivery of this soliloquy I’ve ever seen. He makes it sound like it’s not a portentous speech everyone already knows but a morally serious real-time deliberation, by a highly intelligent person in extreme pain, considering what it would mean to end his own life.

My dad worked at Cardowan and the guys he’s introduced me to down the years who he met there are some of the finest I’ve ever known. Really excited for Ewan’s upcoming book on the British working class, get yourself a copy 📚
Today’s Daily Record has a feature about my research on the closure of Cardowan colliery in Lanarkshire. It was pivotal in the build up to the 1984-85 miners’ strike and breaking union power. For more, read my new book, An Injury to All: The Unmaking of the British Working Class.

What an absolute gem Lucy was. Consistently had her on the phone at the ticket office sorting me tickets. Home, Away, she sourced for me every time right where I wanted them. Bless her, couldn’t fathom why there was a Scottish Orient fan living in Hammersmith. RIP ANGEL ❤️🅾️⭐️
It is with extreme and profound sadness that Leyton Orient Football Club today announces the recent passing of Ticket Office Manager Lucy Freeman at the age of just 35. On Saturday, when the O’s host Plymouth Argyle in E10, we invite all supporters to join us in observing a period of silence in Lucy’s memory ❤️ #LOFC #OneOrient
