absolutely deranged
It's a bit silly how so many Japanese verbs clearly are of the compound form noun+(another verb) morphologically yet they spell them with a single kanji making for an indivisible appearance

Same tbh It's become clear to me that the models can now accelerate discovery and dislodge us from stagnation. In the meantime the disempowerment effects are getting worse but as of today can still be coped with. Seems like we entered a good window to stop!
Opus 5.5 feels like a good place to stop AI development

2016, a friend gets hired at Google: Dude that’s awesome! I’m making a bit less but still plenty, but I’ll apply next year 2026, a friend working at a frontier lab for two years: Congrats on, uh, building The Device. Generational wealth will insulate you from the effects I guess

When someone builds something I dreamt about for years, I used to feel "wow, a kindred spirit!". After AI, that's gone. "I gave ✨creative direction✨" is not the same kind of person as "I built this".

Anthropic has disproven ETH as well. Come on, guys. When are we going to see some real competition? When is one of you going to disprove a result the other proves?

I choose to believe that there still is an underlying deeper pattern, we just have yet to uncover the theory for it. It's the epicycle discovery stage
A pessimistic hypothesis for complexity theory: every simple and beautiful algorithm can be made log(n)^epsilon faster by making it incredibly ugly

"If you had an exponential amount of compute" we don't even have an exponential amount of the universe 😭
If you had an exponential amount of compute you could solve simulate biology exactly and wouldn't need to run any experiments. Some of you will think "of course, but that's an unrealistic assumption" and others will think "no, you need experiments even with that much compute. That's just How It's Done". You would of course need evaluations once you have a solution, but you don't in principle need experiments to find it: Experiments are a way to save compute, dating from a time when it was much more expensive. And I think the presentation is exponential but real systems aren't irreducibly exponential. AlphaFold worked, after all.

also, I remember the time back when the word 'exponential' meant something

It is still actually useful. For instance, I was at a café earlier today, and they had a 'teh susu' and I wondered "what is susu" but then I saw 鲜奶茶 below and thought "right" and ordered without wasting an extra conversation turn 😇
In some way, learning Chinese in Singapore is like what I imagine learning Dutch in the Netherlands must be like. You can see it everywhere, but no-one will ever speak it to you

When I'm waking up, my sleepy brain sometimes convinces me to not get up just yet as whatever it is that I'm dreamily thinking about is actually Important and Valuable Then I finally get up half an hour later and the illusion evaporates in a second What is that about

so now what I wonder about is: is Lean now locked in forever as the language for mathematics? or could you have interoperability, where the two proof assistant systems formalise each other to trust each other's claims
TBF Lean’s rise had little to do with dependent types. Rather, its pleasant UX turned a few mathematicians into enthusiasts who built a library of mostly… classical math, which in turn spurred unprecedented adoption by stars like Terence Tao.

"We believe torment is the most natural way to interact with the Nexus" – every tech startup nowadays for some reason
We believe voice is the most natural way to interact with intelligence, so we created Dessa, the most authentic full-duplex speech model ever built. Talking with it feels like talking with a person…full of emotion, nuance, pauses, and a natural cadence. block.xyz/dessa

Turns out that the word 'sidereal' (like 'sidereal day' for a single rotation of the Earth not with respect to the Sun but to the rest of the universe, i.e. ~23h56m) comes from Latin and means "relating to the stars" All this time I parsed it as side-real. It made sense!

Craziest thing about the equator is that the moon is sideways
Craziest thing about the northern hemisphere is that the moon is upside down
