National Security Agency (NSA) and world leaders warn of security flaws found in PHP programming language Calif researchers first found this flaw using OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol In Europe, Asia and on other continents, authorities have taken a number of government websites offline for the time being to protect them from newly identified security vulnerabilities in a programming language that powers the vast majority of websites online. The NSA told organizations to patch 2 critical PHP flaws, dubbed PHP2Shell, or pull unpatched servers offline. Both bugs live in PHP’s core, so every installation serving web requests is at risk, whatever site runs on top. When a request exhausts memory or hits a fatal error, PHP can leave half-built or freed memory that cleanup code or later requests trust. On Apache’s mod_php, a demonstrated exploit triggers the corruption before any application code runs, so logins and app-level checks cannot block it. Cloudflare saw attacks before PHP shipped fixed versions 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 and 8.2.35 on October 21. VirusTotal counts about 5.1M IP addresses running PHP, and about 758K that show a version run end-of-life branches with no patched release. That long tail will set how long PHP2Shell stays exploitable, since each owner must upgrade, find a backport or take the server offline.
Researchers using GPT-5.6 Sol found massively critical flaw in PHP, which runs about 70% of websites, knocked major sites offline as operators rushed to patch. Calif, an AI security firm, who found this, said in a statement that the vulnerabilities could put 70% of the world’s websites at risk if they aren’t patched quickly, and called them “the most severe vulnerabilities ever discovered by AI, if not in all of software history.” > PHP rushed out fixes as it could let attackers without accounts take over web servers. > Both bugs score 9.2 on the CVSS severity scale and affect PHP versions as old as 5.4. > When a request hits PHP’s memory cap at the wrong moment, PHP frees memory but keeps pointers to it, which a later request on that worker can hijack. > Auditors spotted the weakness in 2024, but the fix stalled for months, partly because nobody had shown a practical attack. > Wiz, a cloud security company, now owned by Google, says the models let one researcher finish in a week what once took a top team months. > A leak of the CVE numbers forced PHP to ship a day early, and Cloudflare now reports early attack attempts.

Japan’s wave of corporate breaches is the latest sign that AI is changing how hacking works. Since Sept 25, 18 Japanese companies have disclosed breaches, including Tokyo Metro, Japan Post, Lawson, Nikkei, Yamato and Sagawa. Attackers got about 6.6M Times Car accounts, some with driver’s license images. Burger King Japan says 11.18M app member records were affected, and Sourcenext says up to 22.5M records may be out. Last week, JPCERT/CC, the country’s national computer emergency response team, posted its findings from the investigations into these breaches. The attackers used AI to scan for known vulnerabilities and to attack companies’ APIs. Often they did this by pulling apart a company’s Android app to find the endpoints and any keys left in the code. It is also no surprise that Japanese companies are particularly vulnerable. Japan is still catching up on basic digitization, with many offices still using fax machines to this day! Now even the PM is getting involved, urging anyone running a PHP website to patch two critical vulnerabilities immediately, or temporarily take the site offline if they can't. xitter.cf/takaichi_sanae/status/…

Well, the Keynote Session of Zoomtopia 2026 was simply full of surprises. Captain of NASA Artemis Mission talking about "mission critical" meaning life and death, "Unified Context Layer" with MCP and Headless, a choir to wrap it up in the end. We need to learn the lyrics and be able to sing it out loud by ourselves toward our customers. That was awesome from @Zoom . 😀👏 – at Minato-ku, Tokyo

I've just noticed one thing. "Likes" are back to where we used to have them. I'm on Android. Hope this is the fixed UI, @grok . To be honest, I want it this way. I've had difficulties checking and posting. 😅 – at Minato-ku, Tokyo
Something has gone wrong with the UI. Is it just me? I can't see the posts I "liked". The whole section is gone. I'm on Android. Do you know why, @grok ?

UPDATE: Specific mitigation guidance for the recently identified PHP critical vulnerabilities is now available. Secure your servers today. Guidance and technical steps here: nsa.gov/Press-Room/Press-Rel…
Effective Immediately, all organizations using PHP for their systems are advised to be prepared for an update addressing two critical vulnerabilities. PHP is widely used for web applications. These vulnerabilities often provide a direct path to the server's file system or database. If an immediate update is not feasible, it is recommend that organizations take the system offline until it can be fully mitigated. NSA will follow up shortly with more specific guidance.

OpenAI has played the big part in discovering the critical security flaws in PHP and it's what Prime Minister Takaichi posted on X directly on 21:55 JST, possibly the very first time we're seeing a political leader in Japan posting or saying out loud about technical issues. – at Minato-ku, Tokyo
OpenAI models helped researchers—operating as part of our Patch the Planet initiative—discover critical security flaws in PHP, an open-source programming language used to run an estimated 70% of websites. Over the past two months, we led a coalition of maintainers, researchers, and security providers to prepare fixes and protections ahead of disclosure. This duration was necessary because the fix was quite intricate and required a major change to the PHP engine. Every site using PHP can now safely upgrade their version to stay secure, in addition to applying mitigations from various security vendors. Due to the severity of these flaws and PHP’s widespread use, we consider this bug to be one of the most impactful vulnerabilities in recent memory. It also marks a new phase, where AI can find security bugs with internet-scale impact. This is an example of the Defender’s Window in action: to our knowledge, frontier AI was able to find this vulnerability ahead of attackers, giving defenders time to prepare. openai.com/index/coordinated…
