the lovely feeling when you wake up to opus having optimized your game overnight...
It was not really optimize, it was un-fucking up what opus fucked up, bringing the game to a very sad 40ms
Yesterday, it had injected a search by looping over hash values of parameters - in pixel shaders 😳
That's because opus is super sycophantic and tends to forget stuff, so when I asked "no reboot on shader binding change" it translated it into "shaders must find their own value from the list each time", instead of what I asked: "move shader binding out of the kernel"
Anyway thanks Opus for chewing through my tokens and bringing us back to 19ms.
I want to release this game soon so I have 3 swarms working on orthogonal aspects: one is experimenting on rendering and optimization, another on lookdev and the third one tuned gameplay with me. They ended up all popping apps on my macbook air and I was not enjoying the smell of roasted weener.
So I borrowed a couple of macs to offload the M4 but then they started competing for resource, as they couldn't agree on locks, so I had one of them make a job scheduler.
🧠 The Brain Cyst megastructure reaches out to the enemy and pleads to join your rank 🥺
(by performing a quick brain surgery to implants a brain leash)
Trained a nerfed version of NVidia's DLSS 5 (DLSS-lite) to make the game more photorealistic.
Result?
A deferred success
TouchDraw turned the macbook air trackpad into a drawing pad. It took Muse Wonder about 10 iterations to get it semi ok then gave up and gave it to opus so it could be ok ok
it is very useful to give... opus confusing notes 😂
Now down to 12ms with 8K characers
Sol is decent at implementing optimizations but you really need to know what you're doing because it'll go off in the opposite direction and before you know it, usage is gone, so I'm glad we get resets daily @thsottiaux
