Our research reveals that people with disabilities face obstetric ableism in labour and delivery care. Collaborative, respectful, disability-affirming care can advance #DisabilityJustice in childbirth. Read more: bmcpregnancychildbirth.biome…
5/5 Our analysis uses data from the Disability & Pregnancy Study, led by @HilaryKBrown @latarasoff @ProulxLaurie @queer_kate @yonalunsky et al. at @UTSCDHS @UTSCresearch The full community report is available here: ices.on.ca/publications/rese…
4/5 Shared decision-making is especially important in the context of ableism—disabled pregnant people & parents are too often presumed incompetent. Shared decision-making can help disrupt obstetric ableism in childbirth & facilitate collective access to labour & delivery care.
3/5 Johanna explained that by participating in the care planning meeting, she and her spouse were able to express their concerns to clinicians and have those concerns addressed. She said, “That made me feel good because everybody was in the room and listening to me.”
2/5 Providers can facilitate shared decision-making by valuing and respecting patient input. For example, it was meaningful to Johanna (pseudonym) that everybody involved in her care—including her & her spouse—participated in a care planning meeting in advance of the birth.
🧵1/5 We found that shared decision-making is key to promoting collaborative, respectful, and disability-affirming care. This means care-related decisions are shared between patients & providers (v providers making decisions for patients, or deferring care decisions to patients).

Over the last 7 years, our team has undertaken the largest study of disability and pregnancy in Canada.
We analyzed data on ~150,000 births to people with disabilities and talked to 62 people about their experiences of pregnancy care. 1/16

When ppl claim "mental illness" invalidates political acts like self-immolation, it reveals a lot about their view of disabled people's autonomy & capacity for political engagement. It implies political choices are less valid bc of disability. We shouldn't entertain this. 1/

If there was ever a time to donate to UNRWA, it is now. When 9 Western countries - led by the US - have decided to cut their funding in a dystopian retaliation for the ICJ ruling, and therefore cut Palestinians' main source of humanitarian assistance.
