something there is that doesn’t love a wall — Robert Frost —
I get sad whenever I see a new old wall. These walls make me very sad. They sit forgotten and unloved. Entirely unloved. Then I come and see them, and I love them. They are orphan walls. But whenever I get invited to inspect a new old one I get sad for an entire week at least. Sometimes a full month. I get sad they have been so unloved for so long, for hundreds of years.

a wise guy recently said to me “competence is unconscious”
He moves like he's made of water. He obviously listened to Bruce Lee. "Be like water." Very cool, bro!

Yes. . . “Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life.”

“Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not money, I am become as a sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.” “And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not money, I am nothing.” “And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not money, it profiteth me nothing.” “Money suffereth long, and is kind; money envieth not; money vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, doth not behave unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.” “…And now abideth faith, hope, money, these three; but the greatest of these is money.” — I Corinthians xiii (adapted) —

I’m halfway through a reread of George Orwell’s “Keep the Aspidistra Flying,” where the main character is a poet whose only apparent lucrative choice in life is to become a slogan-maker for some massive mind-fucking marketing engine. The scoffing quality of his monologues as he resists this decision is laugh-out-loud hilarious, but [***spoiler alert***] he eventually caves in and sells his soul to become a corporate shill and thereby gets the girl. It’s among the saddest endings in any book — sadder, perhaps, than 1984. Anyway, this puts me in mind of it.
