A perfect explanation of what's going on in way too many schools.
It’s disappointing how many awful takes on learning come from within the field of education itself.
Imagine some portion of pro basketball coaches deciding that all they'll do during practice is have a group discussion about the sport and their relationship with it.
Thanks to the level of accountability and incentives in athletics, that situation would naturally resolve: the team would get their butt handed to them every game, and the coach would get fired.
It all comes down to measuring performance and holding coaches accountable for obtaining performance results.
But in education, lots of people avoid measuring performance or hide behind nebulous proxy metrics instead (e.g., engagement).
Trump clearly believes this is true. As obsessed as he is with his image and legacy, he has no regrets. And, honestly, I agree.
But the messaging has been the real problem.
I wish Harry Potter were real so I could find out if anyone has figured out a way to domesticate garden gnomes. I want one so bad.
Helped a kid fill out his college applications recently.
He didn't know how to write his own address, misspelled his own middle name (and thought it was right), and couldn't read instructions and process them into what he needed to do.
He has a 3.8 GPA.

Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cheesecake
Ingredients
Crust
1½ cups graham cracker crumbs
⅓ cup butter, melted
Cheesecake filling
4 (8-ounce) blocks cream cheese, softened
½ cup granulated sugar
2 cups heavy whipping cream
Middle layer
1 box (5-count) Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cakes
Ganache topping
8 ounces white chocolate, chopped
½ cup heavy cream
Red decorating icing
Green sanding sugar
Instructions
Mix the graham cracker crumbs and melted butter. Press firmly into the bottom of a 9-inch springform pan and chill.
Beat the cream cheese and sugar until smooth.
In a separate bowl, whip 2 cups of heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Gently fold it into the cream cheese mixture.
Spread half the filling over the crust. Arrange the Christmas Tree Cakes in a single layer, then spread the remaining filling over the top.
Cover and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, or overnight, until firm.
Heat the remaining ½ cup of heavy cream until steaming. Pour it over the chopped white chocolate and let it sit for 2 minutes. Stir until smooth, then cool slightly.
Pour the ganache over the chilled cheesecake. Drizzle with red icing and sprinkle with green sanding sugar. Refrigerate for 30 minutes to set.
Slice and serve chilled. Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator.
mmmm I love cinnamaldehyde
Hot Tamales have no cinnamon in them. The box says cinnamon flavored, and the heat is artificial flavor.
The label reads sugar, corn syrup and modified food starch. Everything after that is under 0.5%, starting with artificial flavors, dextrin, confectioners glaze, artificial color, medium chain triglycerides, carnauba wax, sodium citrate, pectin, 3 acids and 5 dyes. Cinnamon isn't anywhere, not as a spice, an oil or an extract.
What burns in cinnamon is a molecule called cinnamaldehyde. FDA lists it as a synthetic flavoring substance, which means flavor houses make it without the bark, and it goes in by the drop.
The red is Red 40 and Red 3. FDA revoked Red 3 in January 2025 and gave food makers until January 15, 2027 to take it out, so a box bought next Halloween should read differently.
