I have apparently developed another controversial coaching opinion.
If you join the cross country team, the cross country meets are mandatory.
I know.
Pretty extreme stuff.
And if there is a club soccer game scheduled at the same time, we are still going to expect you to be at the XC meet.
Apparently this requires explanation now.
What surprises me more is the outrage this generates.
"You mean they HAVE to go?"
Yes.
That's how being on a team works.
We practice so we can compete.
The meets aren't optional bonus content you unlock if nothing better shows up on the family calendar.
I didn't realize "athletes are expected to attend competitions" had become one of my hottest coaching takes.
But here we are.

Coaching is one of the most rewarding jobs. You are changing someone’s perspective of themselves and what they’re capable of.
And i you do it right, it’s not really about the person, it’s about who they become

Low ferritin can ruin a season.
The athletes most affected are often your hardest workers, the ones doing everything you ask. When results decline, many assume the solution is more work. Sometimes that’s exactly what makes things worse. Not every struggling runner has a training problem.
At Los Alamos, we educate parents and athletes about ferritin early. Here’s a slide we share with our families.

XC parents: your role this summer is simple but important.
Help make sure your athlete gets to practice, completes their on-your-own runs, and that running remains a priority even during vacations. Let’s be honest: most runs take less than an hour and can usually be done before the rest of the family is even ready for the day.
If you’re vacationing somewhere that isn’t safe to run outside… where exactly are you vacationing? 😄
Beyond running, parents can make a huge difference by helping athletes:
• train in relatively new running shoes
• eat mostly home-cooked meals and have a good stock of snacks
• maintain a normal sleep schedule
• actually hear that alarm in the morning
Summer isn’t a break from responsibilities. In many ways, teenagers need more structure and support during the summer than they do during the school year.
A successful fall season is built during the summer.

84% of 11-year-olds aren't allowed to leave their street.
53% can't leave their front yard.
92% of 14-year-olds can't leave their neighborhood.
We built a culture obsessed with safety. The result? A generation that's measurably more anxious:

More evidence that the global decline in test scores that began after 2012 is linked to the proliferation of smartphones and computers in class: The slide was bigger in countries where students began spending more time on devices (for leisure)

Jeff Galloway, a 1972 U.S. Olympian and beloved coach, but perhaps best known for teaching the world that slowing down was the secret to going further, has died at the age of 80. 🕊️
His revolutionary run-walk-run method (affectionately known around the world as “Jeffing”) transformed marathon running from an elite pursuit into something beautifully ordinary, accessible to anyone willing to lace up their shoes.
He survived a devastating heart attack in 2021, where his heart stopped for four and a half minutes before five stents brought him back. Doctors credited his decades of endurance training with helping keep him alive. True to form, he responded not by resting on his laurels, but by relearning to walk and then planned to return to the marathon. Before an injury forced him to scratch from last December’s Honolulu Marathon, Galloway was set to become the first person to complete a marathon in eight consecutive decades. He was planning to return in 2026.
“My mission now, at the age of 80-plus, is to show that people can do things that are normally not done, and can do them safely,” he told The New York Times last month.
Galloway’s Book on Running is considered probably the best-selling running coaching book of all time.
Jeff Galloway opened up running to everyone. He is survived by every single person who ever doubted themselves, took their first step and made it to the other side of a finish line that they initially didn’t think would be possible. ♥️

Specializing a kid early on is bad. Have them do different sports.
For example:
XC - fall
Indoor track - winter
Outdoor track - spring

Stop hinging at the hips when you try to lean forward! That breaks your stride.
Run tall, engage your core, and tilt your entire body forward from the ankles. This is the controlled fall that makes running efficient. Think "Toy Story: Falling with Style!" 🙌

I get asked about college recruiting for sports A LOT.
The best thing you can do isn't pay for a service. It's send a simple e-mail to the coach that includes:
Name, School, Year...
Best performances and where they took place.
Academics: Class rank/Test scores.
Coaches names and contact
Any links to videos of your competitions
And if you have it, any positive connection to the school/team (i.e. former HS teammate on the team)
That's it. Don't make it incredibly long. Don't send your life story. State that you are interested in the school and program for X or Y reason and then outline all the key info.
