CANADIAN TV TIME MACHINE 📺 THE POLKA DOT DOOR (1971–1993) Remember when a few colourful polka dots and a familiar little theme song meant it was time to settle in front of the television? Premiering on TVOntario in 1971, The Polka Dot Door became a beloved part of Canadian childhood for more than two decades. Inspired by the BBC’s Play School, the series combined songs, stories, crafts and educational adventures with a rotating cast of friendly hosts and four unforgettable stuffed companions: Humpty, Dumpty, Marigold and Bear. And, of course, there was Polkaroo! The lovable green character had a habit of appearing whenever one of the hosts was conveniently absent, leaving that host disappointed to discover they’d missed him yet again! Each weekday had its own theme, from Treasure Day and Dress-Up Day to Imagination Day, when Polkaroo traditionally made his appearances. For countless Canadian kids growing up in the ’70s and ’80s, that opening theme was the sound of childhood. Who else remembers watching The Polka Dot Door on TVO? And did you ever wonder why that poor host kept missing Polkaroo? #PolkaDotDoor #CanadianTelevision #CanadaNostalgia
