Some collieries were situated in unlikely places. Scaitcliffe Colliery in Accrington town centre was sunk c 1859, closing 1962. Avoiding subsidence damage was a challenge! #mininghistory #Accrington #Lancashire

When electric ‘bottle’ lamps by Davis of Derby, Oldham, Swan and Ceag of Barnsley came into use in the early 1930’s miners still needed oil lamps to test for gas, the bottle lamp was an extra 3 kgs to carry #mininghistory #minerslamps

When I was a kid it seemed that every other edge-land pub had pit head gear behind it. Now there is only this one in the whole of #Lancashire, the Old Boat House at Astley Green, next to the terrific @mining_museum & the Bridgewater Canal (Leigh Branch). It's quite a spot.

The new lamp room at Newtown Colliery, Pendlebury Salford in 1937. Protector Lamp & Lighting C Ltd was only 2.5 miles away hence the lamps of choice. Protector Lamp had already made their millionth lamp by 1914 #mininghistory #minerslamps #oillamps #Pendlebury

The only surviving headgear on the Lancashire coalfield. Local to me, it always makes me stop and stare when I look at the skyline on my local walks. Amazing photo by Gary Clee 📸 #astleygreencolliery @AstleyColliery @mining_museum
