The writings of the prophets were both about Christ and words from Christ by Christ’s Spirit through the prophets (1 Pet. 1:11). The New Testament is words about Christ from Christ by Christ’s Spirit through the apostles and apostolic men (see John 14:26; 15:26–27; 16:12–15).

“Reading a God-breathed book is both thrilling and dangerous, especially for preachers. It is thrilling because there is no other book in the world like the Bible. Its utter uniqueness is part of what Christians assert. But given the kind of book it is, reading it is also dangerous. If readers treat it flippantly or if interpreters try to bend its teachings to conform to their agendas, such disregard for what Scripture says is an affront to the God who breathed its words. When we take seriously the truth of Scripture as a God-breathed book, we will do our best to interpret it faithfully. And preachers will do their very best to discern the intent of the biblical authors. Since God has inspired the words of those authors, the meaning of those words matters more than any other words in the world.” —@mitchellchase and @drandrewhebert
Lots of good stuff from @mitchellchase and @drandrewhebert in their new book “The Path to Preaching.” One such example: “The New Testament authors teach us how to read and understand the Old Testament, including how to see Christ there….when we discern Christological types in Old Testament passages that the New Testament authors didn't identify as typological, we are simply imitating the hermeneutic of the apostles. We are seeking to read the Old Testament as they did. The hermeneutic of the apostles is from Jesus, their writings are inspired, and so their interpretation of the Old Testament is entirely trustworthy and accurate.”

If you think the hope of Christmas began in Matthew, you missed it by 39 books. The Old Testament is full of patterns and prophecies of the Christ. Genesis prophesies joy for the world, because a promised son would bring blessing and salvation to the nations. One of the most glorious aspects of the Old Testament is how much it pictures the person and work of the Lord Jesus. This Advent season, why not spend time seeing the ways that the Old Testament is full of Christ? My book There Shone a Holy Light: Beholding Christ and Christmas in the Old Testament (published by @Christian_Focus) is a 25-day devotional book that guides you through the season of Advent. Looking for a devotional to use with your family? Wanting to hand out Advent materials to your church or small group? Consider There Shone a Holy Light. And now is the time to plan, because we’re still in the first half of October. Advent begins November 29th this year. At the Westminster Bookstore online, you can get copies (and use “CHASE” as a promo code for your total to go even lower). They’re available on Amazon too. If you know someone looking for a resource like this, I hope you’ll point them to it.

Here is an example of what others are saying about The Path to the Pulpit. @mitchellchase and I wrote this to help pastors. Releases Oct 15 from @BHAcademic. Here’s what Joel Gregory, a prince among preachers, has to say: “marinate yourself in this book.”

We’re just over a month away from the release! Available October 15 from @BHAcademic! We wrote this for preachers, teachers, & students of God’s Word to gain a greater appreciation for its riches. We hope the book will be like a shovel in your hand to help you dig deeper!
When we study Scripture and prepare to preach, the questions we ask are important. And the right questions are not new. They're ancient, time-tested, trustworthy. This October, The Path to the Pulpit: Four Ancient Questions for Faithful Preaching releases from @BHAcademic. @drandrewhebert and I wrote this book to strengthen and encourage preachers. Every week they tread an old path as they ascend to the pulpit. And there is help along this path--help that sounds like these questions: 1) What does the text mean? 2) How does the text show Christ? 3) How does the text apply to me? 4) How does the text give me hope? The Path to the Pulpit is theological and practical. It engages hermeneutics and homiletics. It delves into church history to mine the riches of the saints on whose shoulders we stand. Our goal was to offer a fresh treatment on the subject of faithful preaching. We were honored to receive strong endorsements from Robert Smith Jr, Richard Barcellos, Hershael York, Brandon Smith, Stephen Presley, Dustin Messer, Joel Lawrence, Joel Gregory, Daniel Dickard, Brian Arnold, and Joel Beeke. Preaching is a glorious and sacred responsibility. We hope The Path to the Pulpit will increase your joy and confidence in proclaiming the Scriptures. You can pre-order it right now. If you want to support the book's upcoming release, share this post so that awareness will spread. Do you meet with a cohort of preachers and talk about the craft? Do you teach workshops on preaching? Do you teach courses on preaching? Are you looking for new material on the blending of hermeneutics and homiletics? We hope you'll consider including this book.

More of this.
Beautiful images of a historic church, right? Think again. This church was built just last year in Oklahoma. Expect more of this in the years to come. The dark spell that once convinced us that tradition was our enemy is being broken.

Making accusations publicly, trying to smear a pastor’s reputation, cowardly refusing to go directly to the pastor/church in private, mailing or emailing or posting slanderous things = sinful, schismatic behavior of the worst kind. A great response to such things here 👇🏻
This is a sad, sordid affair. May the Lord cause truth to be exposed, repentance & forgiveness to be granted, and grace to abound.
