Dorothy made me think of my own cousin who went from being a young boy one day to identifying as a hijda, third-sex or transgender the next. It was tough for them, but there were signs all along. Their mother, a municipality sweeper; their father long dead; their sibling a rogue.
Friends in #Pune and around:
Tomorrow, I will speak to students at @FLAMEUniversity on "Queering the Indian Archive". The talk will feature highlights from my course on queer Indian history, which I have now offered at several institutions.

🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ It has now been six months since the passage of the Transgender Amendment Act. All around us, we see trans folx who are struggling: struggling to have their documents authorized, struggling to receive gender affirming treatment, struggling to keep their sanity alive, struggling – in the face of the government’s monumental gaslighting of their identities – to comprehend what their futures hold. There is no end in sight to their pain. What is the way forward that we, as the queer community have charted? What is our plan?
Much like our activism 25 years ago, we have begun with appealing to the courts, and demanding that our constitutional protections be upheld. This is a good start, and it is an important fight. But it cannot be our only field of struggle against this unjust law.
These are fascist times. We will have to correct some of the wrongs thrust on us by fascists at the federal level, by undoing those wrongs in the states. Therefore, some of the effort that we as LGBTQIA+ Congress workers have set out for ourselves is to encourage friendly Congress representatives and governments to clean up the garbage that the RSS-BJP has created nationwide, at least in the states in which we hold power. In the last few months, we have dialogued with the legal representatives of these states to support the trans petitioners in the Supreme Court. That conversation is ongoing.
Another avenue for our efforts will be to build a popular movement against the RSS’ efforts to disenfranchise India’s trans citizens. The franchise has often only narrowly been linked to voting rights, but we see enfranchisement as covering every aspect of what it takes to make a citizen in this country. The Transgender Amendment Act is an attack on the idea that transgender people are Indian citizens. Gender markers appear on all forms of our national identification. If the government can steal your ability to say which gender you are, it has effectively undone your citizenship. It has made you a subject.
But transgender folx are not the only people whose citizenship is under threat today. We have seen the scheming ways in which the RSS-BJP has tried to steal the franchise of Muslims and the poor through the SIR process. The effort to make Muslims into subjects has been ongoing since the days of the Citizenship Amendment Act. All these Amendment Acts. In Act after Act, Indian citizens are being amended into subjects. The farm laws were an attempt to render the decision-making powers of poor farmers obsolete. We fought against these attempts at involuntary subject-hood, and we will fight against the Transgender Amendment Act as well.
In our long fight against Sec. 377, one of the things we did successfully as a queer community, was to build bridges with those who were not queer – to ask them why the fight against this law was their fight too. Allies were essential to our struggle then. When we won, lost, and eventually won the case against Sec. 377, allies celebrated with us, and shared our pain. They made our lives a conversation on the evening news, in tea shops, and on the dining table. They ensured we were not forgotten. This effort of making allies worked well for us the last time. We have to work at it again. Six months have passed. This event is a modest effort at building those alliances once again.
If you are in Bengaluru, please sign up and join us tomorrow!

AllySpeak: Allies for Transgender Equality
In collaboration with Queer Nilayam
AllySpeak brings together the voices of artists, academics, activists, authors, journalists, lawyers, and other allies, all united in their opposition to the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Act, 2026. Passed by the Union Government earlier this year, the Act diminished and degraded transgender identity, rights, and dignity across India.
The Indian National Congress opposed these amendments, stating in Parliament that the Act, which “presents as a reform, is in reality a retreat from constitutional morality, judicial guidance and the hard-fought rights of one of the most marginalized communities in our country.”
Six months after the passage of the Act, many transgender Indians are struggling. Through the voices of allies, we would like to reassure an embattled transgender community that their struggle is not theirs alone. In raising our voices together, we hope to build a citizens-led movement to have this law repealed – and to defeat other forms of disenfranchisement that the Union government is foisting on other marginalized communities. Together, we must strengthen our collective commitment to safeguarding the constitutional values of liberty, equality, and dignity for every Indian, which this law seriously challenged.

If you’re having trouble finding your name in Maharashtra’s new SIR draft electoral rolls, try this method:
1. 𝘍𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘯𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘭
Go to the Election Commission’s electoral search website and enter your EPIC number and state:
electoralsearch.eci.gov.in/
2. 𝘕𝘰𝘵𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘕𝘶𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳
Once you find your name, note down your Part Number. Also note your Assembly Constituency, if you don’t already know it.
3. 𝘋𝘰𝘸𝘯𝘭𝘰𝘢𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘸 𝘚𝘐𝘙 𝘥𝘳𝘢𝘧𝘵 𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘭
Go to the Election Commission’s electoral roll download page:
voters.eci.gov.in/download-e…
Select your district and Assembly Constituency.
4. 𝘋𝘰𝘸𝘯𝘭𝘰𝘢𝘥 𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘕𝘶𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳
Your Part Number may have changed in the new draft roll, so don’t search only for the exact same number.
For example, if your old Part Number was 179, download Parts 178, 179 and 180. If you still can’t find your name, try a few more parts before and after.
5. 𝘚𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘯𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘰𝘳 𝘌𝘗𝘐𝘊 𝘯𝘶𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳
Open the downloaded PDF files and use the search/find option to search your name or EPIC number.
I found my own name in Part 178, even though my previous Part Number was 179. So, your Part Number may have shifted forward or backward in the new draft roll.
In short:
Find old Part Number → Download nearby new Parts → Search your name/EPIC in the PDFs.

The strength of the LGBTQIA+ movement has always been in local, grassroots organizing against the structures that prevent our community members from leading full and equal lives. This week, Don Hasar, National Coordinator for Community Engagement and Movement Building, AIPC LGBTQIA+ Domain, led a discussion with trans men, trans women, non-binary people, members of the Kinnar and Hijra communities, and other queer people in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand.
These communities are suffering as a result of the changes brought about by the Modi government’s Transgender Amendment Act, 2026. Queer people are anxious about their inheritance rights, identity documents, healthcare, welfare and legal recognition. Don explained how this new law can shut people out of not one, but many institutions that structure their everyday lives. Through engagements with the community, the AIPC LGBTQIA+ Domain hopes to bring greater legal and political clarity, collective care and solidarity with queer communities. Their fight is not theirs alone. The Indian National Congress stands together with them every step of the way.
Also present at the meeting was Naveen Kumar, the AIPC LGBTQIA+ Domain’s Deputy State Head for Jharkhand. We thank Souvik Saha and the entire team at Jamshedpur Queer Circle for hosting this interaction, and doing important work for the community in the state.

Dolly Parton was a queer icon.
Turning the very things that people belittled and shamed her for into elements of pride, she used her extravagant image to advocate for the entire LGBTQIA+ community.
Her support came, ironically, from a deeply ethical life rooted in a faith that was compassionate, inclusive, and liberatory — not the kind usually associated with the American South, the place of her birth, death and belonging.
An early champion of queer marriage, she vigorously defended the rights and dignity of the transgender community, ever since she contributed the song "Travelin' Thru" to the soundtrack of the road movie "Transamerica" in 2005.
That hymn (which is a very important part of my own faith practice) equates our emotional and spiritual journeys of self-discovery and personal acceptance as human beings with the unending pilgrimage of life. It is a great metaphor for existence itself. We are on this earth, after all, just pilgrims traveling through.
Goodbye, Dolly. Thank you for always embracing people. Thank you for your uncompromising love, and your inexhaustible fabulosity!
ABBA's "Arrival" is such a soaring, elegant, and majestic tune, that it may well have made an excellent national anthem for a worthy country.
Here, the Dutch National Military Tattoo performs it during the grand finale of their annual show in 2009.
Happy weekend! 🥰

The truth. Never forget.

It is true to say that, my grand father Gopal Godse and Nathuram Godse were active members of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh."

A giant has passed.
I was never privileged enough to be one of Sumit Sarkar's students, but I am eternally indebted to his craft, which has made me a better historian. Every scholar of India's past, who studies those on society's margins, is beholden to how he opened up the field to the necessity of listening to their voices.
Via Tanika and Bhochka, I was grateful to be in his wider ambit. Their loss must be great indeed. My heart goes out to them both.

It's incredibly important to understand this: rape is not rape because it's violent, it's rape because a woman did not agree to or want a finger, a penis or an object inserted into her and it was done anyway. That is rape.

History was made. Inclusion moved forward. 🌈🏅🇮🇳
For the first time, Indian LGBTQIA+ athletes proudly represented our nation at the International Gay Games 2026, returning home with remarkable achievements that have inspired our community and the country.
The All India Professionals' Congress (AIPC) LGBTQIA+ Domain, in collaboration with the AIPC Sports Domain, was honoured to felicitate these trailblazing athletes in Bengaluru, recognising not just their medals, but their courage, resilience, and commitment to making sport a space where everyone belongs.
We were privileged to be joined by Ms. Sowmya Reddy, Former MLA and President of the Karnataka Pradesh Mahila Congress, and Mr. Arvind Narrain, lawyer, author, researcher, and LGBTQIA+ rights activist. Their reflections reinforced a powerful message: that the values of equality, liberty, fraternity, and dignity enshrined in our Constitution must extend to every playing field, every athlete, and every dream.
A special congratulations to Goaty for her phenomenal performance—winning 4 Gold medals and 3 Silver medals across multiple athletics events—and to Sumit Pawar for bringing home Gold in the Javelin Throw. Their achievements are a testament to the incredible talent within our community and a reminder of what becomes possible when opportunity meets determination.
This collaboration between the AIPC LGBTQIA+ Domain and the AIPC Sports Domain marks the beginning of a larger movement. Together, we are committed to fostering conversations, building partnerships, and advocating for policies that make sports safer, more inclusive, and more accessible for LGBTQIA+ persons across Karnataka and India.
At AIPC, we believe that representation matters—not only in politics and public life, but also on the track, the field, and every sporting arena. We remain committed to ensuring that every LGBTQIA+ athlete has the opportunity to participate, compete, and excel with dignity and pride.
This is more than a felicitation. It is the beginning of a movement towards an inclusive sporting future for India.
